Is American cyclocross broken?

In 2018, Curtis White went from a promising talent to an international champion with a sprint win at the Pan American Cyclocross Championships. But he failed to follow up at the national championships, the biggest stage in US cyclocross. 

When USA Cycling announced the new 51-member national team in December, the cyclocross community was excited — U.S. cyclocross racers had finally been recognized on a national team alongside Olympic cycling disciplines. 

Let’s catch our collective breaths, because we cheered loud and hustled hard at the 2018 Cyclocross National Championships in Reno, Nevada.

Before he arrived in Belgium a few weeks ago, Stephen Hyde was a winner.

As racers head to Louisville, Kentucky — site of 2013 Cyclocross World Championships — there’s a chill in the air. Fall has reared its sometimes-ugly head. Mud and muck abound.

At Charm City Cross, the top U.S. riders duked it out on a course that national champion Stephen Hyde called “super Euro.” 

The racers collapsed and stared blankly after they crossed the finish line — dozens of them, with ice-cold towels draped over their heads and team managers spraying water into their faces.
