Mathieu van der Poel came out on top in his heavyweight showdown with arch rival Wout Van Aert to claim a fifth cyclocross world championship on Sunday.

The cyclo-cross world championships, which opened on Friday with the Dutch winning the mixed relay, will culminate on Sunday with a showdown between two of the sport's biggest stars Mathieu van der Poel and Wout Van Aert.

Brace yourself for a clash of the titans at the 2023 UCI Cyclocross World Championships on Feb. 4-5 in Hoogerheide, Netherlands. We are going to see Mathieu van der Poel against Wout Van Aert and Puck Pieterse and Fem van Empel going head-to-head after a season-long slugfest every weekend.

Mathieu van der Poel had his convictions quashed on appeal Tuesday having previously pleaded guilty to assaulting two teenagers at an Australian hotel, the national broadcaster reported.

The Cyclocross season officially kicks off October 9 with the first of 14 UCI World Cup rounds in Waterloo, Wisconsin. Rounds follow in Dublin, all over Europe and with the promise of Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) and Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) on the grids in a build up to the World Championships on February 5.

This upcoming weekend is the start of the European block of 2021 UCI Cyclocross World Cup races on Sunday, October 24. Zonhoven, Belgium hosted the famed sandpit race from 1958 to 1966 and then restarted the race as part of the Telnet Superprestige during the 2009-2010 season. Zonhoven CX was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 but is back in 2021 to kick off a series of Belgian cyclocross World Cup races. The 2020 winners include Belgium’s Toon Aerts and The Netherlands' Annemarie Worst.

The UCI Cyclocross World Cup continued this weekend in Tabor, Czech Republic. World Champion Mathieu Van Der Poel continued his winning streak despite a third row start and Annemarie Worst scored her second World Cup win of the season. 

It was a busy weekend for European cyclocross racers as they spent Saturday racing at the World Cup in Tabor, Czech Republic, before rushing back to Belgium for Flandriencross in Hamme. The course provides one of the most classic races of the season and is the second race in the DVV Trofee series. 

Following the first round of the DVV Trofee series at Koppenbergcross, the storylines for the 2019-20 cross season are crystalizing.

In a showing of complete dominance, Sanne Cant and Mathieu van der Poel led the charge through the beautiful muddy landscape that was Hoogstraten.

Diegem is a classic, a night race that’s almost as celebratory as New Year’s Eve for cyclocross fans in Belgium. (The race’s later start also allows American fans to watch a Belgian cyclocross at a more reasonable hour.) 

Sanne Cant took her fourth consecutive victory in Essen on Saturday, displaying not only her power, but her ability to make the right tactical decisions under pressure. The decisive moment in the women’s race came when Cant dismounted and ran through a deep mud section which Nikki Brammeier rode. 

The DVV Series returns for its fourth round in Essen, a Belgian town on the Dutch border. The undulating course is by and large a wide and fast affair. The open nature of the course has made it more difficult for individual riders to break free in years past.
