Brent Van Moer put on a show of force, riding the stage in a two-man breakaway, attacking with 14 kilometers to go and nearly holding of a peloton. The strength of the young Belgian on Lotto Soudal caught the entire peloton by surprise, forcing Deceuninck Quick Step to scramble in the final five kilometers to erase nearly a minute deficit, blowing up their leadout train in the process.

Despite the ragged finish, the stage saw a fairytale ending as Mark Cavendish won his 31st stage of the Tour de France, years after the cycling world had written him off as finished. By taking points in the intermediate sprint as well, Cavendish secured the green jersey in advance of tomorrow's individual time trial.
