Cobbles, tram tracks, slick corners and rider complaints forced a race neutralization as many GC contenders backed off to avoid disaster.
Only the bravest riders continued fighting for victory, with Uno-X rider Fredrik Dversnes emerging on top after one of the most controversial and chaotic stages of this year's Giro.
