Riders battled cold rain, crashes and chaos, with many finishing the stage shivering and bloodied after a savage day in southern Italy.
Igor Arrieta attacked, crashed, took a wrong turn and still fought back to win the stage ahead of Portuguese rider Afonso Eulálio, who claimed the overall race lead after one of the most dramatic Giro stages of the year.
