Portugal's Joao Almeida ensured he will wear the pink jersey for a 14th consecutive day after defending his overall race lead on Tuesday on the Giro d'Italia's 16th stage won by Slovenian Jan Tratnik.

Peter Sagan soloed to victory in the Giro d'Italia's 10th stage on Tuesday after two teams, Mitchelton and Jumbo-Visma, were forced to pull out before the stage because of positive COVID-19 tests.

Multiple riders and staff have tested positive for COVID-19 the UCI and RCS Sport announced in a joint press release. The tests were the first round, conducted during the rest day, in addition to the multiple safety measures the Giro d’Italia have had in place since the depart in Sicily. Mitchelton-Scott was the worst hit, with several staff members returning positive tests after their GC hopeful, Simon Yates, tested positive several days into the first week. The team released a statement soon after. 

Arnaud Demare took the Giro d'Italia sprinting honours in Brindisi on Friday, his third stage win in four days secured with a record average speed for the race of 51.234 kph.

French champion Arnaud Demare outsprinted the peloton on the 6th stage for his second win of this year's Giro d'Italia on Thursday.

The 2020 Giro d’Italia was originally intended to be an appealing parcours for riders who were targeting the Tokyo Olympics at the end of the season. A lot changed since the route was originally penned out, but the stages have remained largely the same.
