The squad from Italy won the Team Time Trial Mixed Relay at the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal on Tuesday, besting France by eight seconds over the 40.6-kilometer course.
It was the first gold medal for Italy in the team event, which included three men and three women from each participating country. Italy finished fourth in 2025, more than a minute off the podium.
Though a handful of countries opted to skip the relay in order to save their riders for other races, the 15-team field did include many of the world's top riders.

The winning roster featured Mattia Cattaneo, Filippo Ganna, Matteo Sobrero, Vittoria Guazzini, Elisa Longo Borghini and Monica Trinca Colonel, with four of the six riders becoming world champions for the first time.
"We've been chasing this title for so long," said Longo Borghini, who was on the team that took bronze two years ago, as well as silver in the 2022 edition. "I love this event. I'm absolutely over the moon right now."
Ganna, a two-time world champion in the Men Elite Individual Time Trial (2020, 2021), reiterated Longo Borghini's sentiments.
"We've had to dig really deep," Ganna told AFP. "We've been chasing this title for a long time. It's a moment that will stay with us for the rest of our careers."
France finished second in the Team Time Trial Mixed Relay for the second consecutive year after losing to Australia in 2025 by just five seconds.
Switzerland was led by two-time reigning Women Elite Individual Time Trial champion Marlen Reusser and completed the podium Tuesday, overcoming a puncture for Stefan Küng to edge defending champion Australia by 20 seconds. Switzerland also finished third in 2025.
The men handled the first 20.3-kilometer lap of the circuit and then handed things over to the women to ride the same route.
The mixed relay has proven to be highly popular with the competitors since it was added to the roster in 2019 and is the only road cycling event where men and women compete together on the same team.
