It also would give Evenepoel four career titles, tying Fabian Cancellara and Tony Martin for the most in the history of the Elite men's event.
So this isn't merely another world championship defense for one of cycling's biggest stars.
Evenepoel is racing for two pieces of history at once.
What Can Remco Evenepoel Accomplish At The 2026 UCI Road Worlds?
The historical stakes are straightforward.
Cancellara and Martin share the Elite men's individual time trial record with four world championships. Evenepoel enters Montréal with three.
Another victory would put him alongside them with four career titles.
But the streak would belong to Evenepoel alone.
The research identifies Evenepoel as the three-time defending champion after winning in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Michael Rogers and Martin previously achieved three consecutive victories, but nobody has won four straight Elite men's ITT world championships.
A Montréal victory therefore would simultaneously tie the career record and establish an unprecedented four-year winning streak.
That makes the Sept. 20 race one of the championship's clearest record opportunities.
Remco Evenepoel Has Won Three Straight World Time Trial Titles
Evenepoel's run began with his 2023 world championship and continued through victories in 2024 and 2025.
The research does not provide enough detail about each of those three races — including all three host locations, margins and race-by-race circumstances — to responsibly reconstruct them here without introducing outside information.
What it does establish is the most important part of the story: Evenepoel has reached Montréal having won this championship every year since 2023.
His 2025 victory put him alongside the small group of riders who have managed three consecutive Elite men's ITT championships. Now he has an opportunity to move beyond that three-year streak.
And his recent Montréal-area form provides another reason to watch.
Evenepoel won the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec on Sept. 11 before finishing fifth at GP Montréal two days later. Those were road races rather than time trials, but they provide a current form signal immediately before his world title defense.
What Is The 2026 UCI World Time Trial Course?
Evenepoel's record attempt will take place over a 39.2-kilometer course with 220 meters of elevation.
The Elite men's individual time trial begins at 12:45 p.m. local time Sept. 20.
Unlike the climbing-heavy road race later in the championships, the time trial is fundamentally a test of sustained speed, power and aerodynamics.
The course starts on Avenue du Parc and travels through Montréal, taking riders through areas including Old Montréal, the St. Lawrence waterfront and Parc Jean-Drapeau. It also uses Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, home of Formula 1's Canadian Grand Prix, before returning toward Parc Jeanne-Mance.
With only 220 meters of climbing across nearly 40 kilometers, the course is substantially less climbing-focused than the 2025 World Championship time trial in Kigali.
That doesn't mean it's simply a straight-line power test.
The Montréal route includes urban turns, bridges and changes of direction, making bike handling, pacing and line choice relevant in addition to sustained speed.
The research identifies that profile as particularly favorable to established high-speed specialists such as Evenepoel.
In other words, the defending champion has history to chase and a course that gives him a legitimate opportunity to chase it.
Who Could Stop Remco Evenepoel In Montréal?
Evenepoel may be the centerpiece of the race, but a fourth title is far from guaranteed.
Filippo Ganna provides one of the clearest threats. The former world champion brings the specialist profile that should suit a relatively flat, power-oriented 39.2-kilometer course.
Brandon McNulty also arrives with an intriguing combination of time trial ability and current Montréal form. The American finished third at GP Montréal on Sept. 13 and is selected by Team USA for both the road race and individual time trial.
Belgium itself brings additional time trial strength with Alec Segaert and Rune Herregodts, while Great Britain's Ethan Hayter and the Netherlands' Daan Hoole are among the other riders whose specialist characteristics fit the course.
The field also includes established time trial names such as Tobias Foss, a former world champion, along with Denmark's Mikkel Bjerg and Kasper Asgreen.
None enters Montréal carrying the same historical storyline as Evenepoel.
But Evenepoel still has to beat them.
What's At Stake For Remco Evenepoel At The World Time Trial?
There are two numbers that matter most Sunday: four and four.
Four career Elite men's individual time trial world championships would put Evenepoel level with Cancellara and Martin at the top of the historical standings.
Four consecutive championships would put him somewhere neither of those riders — nor anyone else in the history of the Elite men's event — has been.
That distinction makes Montréal different.
Evenepoel already has established a championship streak matched by very few riders. He now has an opportunity to extend it into one that stands alone.
The course appears suited to his strengths. His recent Canadian results provide evidence of strong form. But nearly 40 kilometers through Montréal and a field of elite specialists still separate him from history.
On Sept. 20, Evenepoel won't simply be trying to keep the rainbow jersey.
He'll be trying to make four straight mean something no Elite men's time trialist has accomplished before.
