Nearly three dozen cycling standouts from the United States are headed to 2026 UCI Road World Championships, where they’ll be competing for the coveted rainbow jerseys given to each world champion to be worn throughout the following season.
Some of the Team USA representatives are familiar faces, others are still looking to break through on the biggest stage in cycling and some represent the future of the sport.
The 2026 UCI Road World Championships, the event’s 99th edition, will be held in Montreal from Sept. 20-27, and the eight days of competition will feature road races and time trials for men and women in a variety of age/skill classifications, along with a team time trial mixed relay.

This year will be the second time Montreal has gotten to host the Road World Championships, with the first coming in 1974. That was the first time the event had been held outside of Europe. The Road Worlds also was held in Canada in 2003 (Hamilton, Ontario).
The 2026 event comes as the cycling season winds down, and many of the elite men among the nearly 1,000 athletes from 75 countries are days removed from the conclusion of the Vuelta a España 2026.
The American men pulling double-duty are Kevin Vermaerke and Larry Warbasse, while five others had a chance to get familiar with the roads in Montreal by participating in the one-day Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal on Sept. 13 – Brandon McNulty (third), Quinn Simmons (fourth), Matteo Jorgenson (19th), Artem Shmidt (DNF), Sean Quinn (DNF).
The latter was won by Mexican star Isaac Del Toro, who was followed by rising French standout Paul Seixas.
But we’re not here to talk about the international front-runners right now. We’re here to learn more about the top riders from the United States you’ll want to see in action at the World Championships.
At the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, the highest-finishing elite man in the time trial was Will Barta in 24th place, while Vermaerke was the highest American in the road race. He finished 23rd.
For the elite women, Chloe Dygert finished ninth in the time trial and 17th in the road race.
5 Team USA Riders To Watch At the 2026 UCI Road World Championships
Brandon McNulty
McNulty, 28, is top-ranked rider from the United States right now, and he’ll be very busy in Montreal as one of two elite men from the USA set to participate in both the individual time trial and road race at the 2026 Road World Championships. The other is Shmidt.
McNulty found success at the Road Worlds in 2016 with a victory in the junior men’s time trial, and he joined the professional ranks the following year.
Among his career highlights are a pair of time trial national championships (2023, 2024) and Grand Tour stage wins at the Giro d’Italia (2023) and La Vuelta (2024).
Quinn Simmons
Simmons, 25, is known around the cycling world as Captain America, and he was able to successfully defend both the name and his road race title at the 2026 Pro Road National Championships in June, where he finished just ahead of Vermaerke and Warbasse. He also won the crown in 2023 and 2025.
Other highlights of the 2026 season for Simmons are a stage win at the 2026 Tour Auvergne Rhone Alpes and a second-place stage finish at the 2026 Tour de France.
Simmons launched himself onto the world stage in 2019 with a win in the junior men’s road race at the UCI Road World Championships
Kristen Faulkner
Faulkner, 33, won the women’s road race at the 2024 and 2025 Pro Road National Championships, but she chose not to defend that title in 2026 after enduring travel complications in her return from the Giro d'Italia Women, where she completed eight of the nine stages before abandoning the race.
Despite missing the national championships, Faulkner made the roster for the Road Worlds, and she also will compete in both races. She’ll be the only woman from the United States doing so.
Earlier in 2026, Faulkner won a pair of gold medals at the Pan American Track Championships (team pursuit, individual pursuit) and a gold medal in the time trial at the Pan American Road Cycling Championships.
In 2024, Faulkner claimed Olympic gold medals in the road race and the team pursuit.
Kate Courtney
With Faulkner absent from the 2026 Pro Road National Championships, Courtney, 30, rose to the occasion and won the road race for her first major win in that discipline.
She already owns cross-country national championships (2017, 2018), cross-country world championship (2018) and a marathon world championship (2025).
Ashlin Barry
Barry, 18, is well-traveled and comes from elite cycling genes.
He is the son of former professional cyclists Dede Demet and Michael Barry and owns dual citizenship in the United States and Canada, though he was born in Spain.
Barry’s debut with the national team in the United States came in 2024, and he broke through with a silver medal at the 2024 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships.
He won the road race and time trial at the 2024 National Junior Championships and repeated in the time trial in 2025.
Most recently, he held his own at the 2026 Pro Road National Championships, where he finished fourth behind Simmons, Vermaerke and Warbasse. And that came just one day after he won the U23 version of the race by one second.
Now, he’ll represent the USA in the Under-23 competition at the Road Worlds, and he’ll be one of two Team USA athletes competing in the U23 road race and time trial.
Barry will be looking to improve on the silver medal he won in the junior time trial at the 2025 Road World Championships in Rwanda.

About The UCI Road World Championships
The UCI Road World Championships boasts more than a century of history and tradition, though it took a gradual evolution to become the spectacle it is today.
The amateur-only debut of the event came in 1921, followed by the inclusion of professional in 1927. The addition of a women’s category came in 1958, and youth categories were added to the menu in 1975.
The weeklong UCI Road World Championships also now includes a team time trial mixed relay (2019) and a U23 women’s title (2022), which was earned in a standalone women’s event for the first time in 2025.
In 2026, the schedule includes 13 separate events over the eight days of competition.
The winners are considered the world champions and get to wear the rainbow jersey during all competitions of the same discipline during the following season.
In 2025, the UCI Road World Championships was held Kigali, Rwanda, in Southeast Africa, marking the first time in race history the action took place on the continent of Africa. All of the news, notes and results from last year can be found here.

One top contender, also the two-time reigning champion and easily the early favorite in the road race, won’t be there. That’s Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogačar, who crashed out of the recent Vuelta a España and chose to end his season prematurely to focus on his recovery.
The five-time Tour de France winner, including 2024, 2025 and 2026, wrecked during Stage 8 of the 21-stage Vuelta, which was held Aug. 22 through Sept. 13. He was leading the race by nearly four minutes, but he left in an ambulance with a fractured collarbone that ultimately required season-ending surgery.
