The UCI Road World Championships are coming to Montréal in September, but Canadian cycling fans don't have to wait until then to start following the story.
The 2026 Vuelta a España ends Sept. 13. Seven days later, the World Championships begin in Montréal.

That turns the Vuelta into three weeks of scouting before international cycling arrives in Canada.
Start With Tadej Pogačar
No rider enters the Vuelta with a bigger storyline than Tadej Pogačar.
After winning his fifth Tour de France, Pogačar heads to Spain attempting to win the only Grand Tour missing from his résumé. Victory would make him the ninth cyclist to win all three Grand Tours.
For Canadians looking ahead to the World Championships, the Vuelta also offers a chance to watch the form of the sport's biggest names late in a demanding season.
But Grand Tour form isn't necessarily a prediction of what will happen in a one-day World Championship road race. Instead, watch how riders handle climbing, time trials, recovery and the accumulated fatigue of three weeks of racing.
Primož Roglič Has His Own History To Chase
Pogačar isn't the only Slovenian with something significant at stake.
Primož Roglič has won the Vuelta four times, tying Roberto Heras for the most victories in race history. One more would make Roglič the first five-time Vuelta champion.
That gives the race two major historical storylines before Stage 1 even begins.

Hugo Houle Connects Spain And Montréal
For Canadian fans, perhaps no rider provides a clearer connection between the Vuelta and the World Championships than Hugo Houle.
The Quebec native and 2022 Tour de France stage winner is on the current Vuelta start list for Alpecin-Premier Tech. He also has been selected for Canada's elite men's road race roster in Montréal.
That means Canadians can follow Houle through three weeks in Europe before watching him return home to race for Canada.
Canada's Montréal Roster
Houle won't be alone.
Cycling Canada also has selected Derek Gee-West, Michael Woods, Michael Leonard, Nickolas Zukowsky and Pier-André Côté for its elite men's World Championships roster.
Woods brings his own connection to Spain. The Ottawa rider is a three-time Vuelta stage winner, giving Canada an established history of success at the race.
From Granada To Montréal
The Vuelta concludes Sept. 13 in Granada.
The World Championships begin Sept. 20 and run through Sept. 27 in Montréal, which is hosting the event for the first time since 1974. That edition was the first Road World Championships held outside Europe.
For Canadian cycling fans, that makes the Vuelta more than the final Grand Tour of the season.
It's the beginning of the countdown to Montréal.
Why 2026 Is Finally Tadej Pogacar’s Vuelta a España Year
Tadej Pogačar is returning to the Vuelta a España for the first time since 2019, when he won three stages and finished third overall as a 20-year-old.
Now, he comes back as the biggest rider in the sport.
We break down why 2026 is finally the right year for Pogačar’s Vuelta return. If he wins, he completes the set of all three Grand Tours.
