Rest day, check. Individual time trial, check. Now, it's time to ease into the business end of the Tour de France 2026, where a series of mountain stages will push the riders to their limits in the days ahead.
First, though, a 174.7-kilometer ride from Chambery to Voiron that is considered flat, despite four categorized climbs in the first 80 kilometers. But, compared to the three mountain days ahead, it essentially is flat.
Unfortunately, the remaining stages will be without another high-profile rider, Florian Lipowitz, who crashed during Tuesday's ITT and was forced out of the race with what was suspected as a collarbone injury, the same thing that took out two-time TDF champion Jonas Vingegaard in Stage 15.

The time trial in Stage 16 was won by favorite Remco Evenepoel, an Olympic and world champion in the event. He bested overall leader Tadej Pogačar by 28 seconds, though he's still four and a half minutes back in the fight for the yellow jersey.
Pogačar is closing in on a third consecutive, and fifth overall, Tour de France title. Evenepoel is second in the General Classification and followed by Isaac del Toro (6:51), Paul Seixas (7:11) and Juan Ayuso (9:22).
Even though Stage 17 is on the flatter side, at least in the second part of the day, it is not expected to end in a sprint finish. The four categorized climbs in the first half of the stage make it likely that some of the more versatile all-arounders will attempt to run away and take the victory.

Outside of the mostly ceremonial ride into Paris in Stage 21, the 174.7-kilometer Stage 17 ride from Chambery to Voiron is the last flat stage on the map for the Tour de France 2026.
Considering what's ahead and what ultimately is on the line, everyone will have a different goal for Stage 17.
The GC will want to stay safe and manage their output to make sure they're fresh for the mountains. Those in contention for the green points jersey will be focused on the intermediate sprint. And the fast men, who probably thought Stage 12 would be their last real opportunity have one more day to fight for victory - if they can survive the climbs in the first half of the day.
The quartet of climbs includes three Category 4 challenges and a Category 3 climb, and while it's not the most difficult terrain, the day also could go to the breakaway.
The stage ends with 30 flat kilometers, which would force any escapees to hold their ground but also give teams the chance to close any gaps and get their sprinters in position.

Who Won The Tour de France In 2025?
Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar added to his growing legacy by winning the Tour de France in 2025.
It was his second consecutive victory at the event, and fourth overall (2020, 2021), making him the sixth rider in history to win four times.
Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain all have won five times, while Chris Froome joins Pogačar with four.
On his way to securing the yellow jersey in 2025, Pogačar was the pre-race favorite.
His title defense featured four stage wins (4, 7, 12, 13), and he finished more than four minutes ahead of runner-up Jonas Vingegaard. Florian Lipowitz was third, 11 minutes behind Pogačar, who also won the King of the Mountains jersey.
Pogačar owns five Grand Tour victories overall, including the Giro d’Italia in 2024, which was part of a historic Giro-TDF double, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished since 1998.
In 2026, Vingegaard, a two-time Tour de France winner, will be looking to match the effort after claiming the GC title at the Giro d’Italia in May and becoming the eighth rider to win all three Grand Tours at least one time.
Merckx has the most GC wins in Grand Tours with 11, followed by Hinault, who has 10.
Pogačar has maintained his elite form in 2026 and started the year with four wins in his first five events. He then added four stages wins on the way to the GC crown at the five-stage Tour de Romandie.
