Jonas Vingegaard sent another reminder that he's one of the best riders in history by winning Stage 20 of the Giro d’Italia 2026 for the fifth victory of his race debut.

He leads the General Classification by more than five minutes, and a safe arrival in Rome on Sunday will make him the eighth rider to win all three Grand Tours.

As has become tradition, the first part of Stage 21 will be a celebration of three hard weeks of racing and an opportunity for the teams to reflect on their success and camaraderie. Then, the spotlight will turn to the sprinters, who will get to battle for one more stage victory, before the curtain falls on this year's Giro d'Italia.

Stage 21 will be a flat 131-kilometer ride around Rome, which should end with Vingegaard hoisting the coveted Giro trophy for the first time in his career.

Vingegaard won the mountainous Stage 20 on Saturday, showing off his top-tier climbing ability on the two 14.5-kilometer climbs to Piancavallo. He finished more than a minute ahead of Felix Gall and increased his lead over Gall in the GC to 5 minutes, 22 seconds.

Barring disaster Sunday, Vingegaard will notch his fourth Grand Tour victory overall. He won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 and the Vuelta a España in 2025.

Stage 21 is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Eastern and should conclude around 12:30 p.m. EDT.

Here’s what to know about Stage 21 of the Giro d’Italia 2026, a 131-kilometer journey around Rome that will be ceremonial, but will conclude with an exciting sprint finish:

Stage 21: Giro d’Italia 2026

We're back in the capital city of Italy - Rome!

Everywhere you look there's history, and there's no reason to believe that Jonas Vingegaard won't be adding to that at the end of this stage.

However, someone besides Vingegaard will win Stage 21 of the Giro d'Italia 2026 in an exciting sprint finale, possibly also deciding the Maglia Ciclamino, before he gets the chance to stand atop the final Giro podium for the first time.

Should he successfully cross the finish line at the end of this 131-kilometer jaunt around Rome, he'll collect his fourth Grand Tour victory overall and become the eighth rider in history to win all three at least once.

This final stage includes a familiar final circuit they'll cover eight times.

The day traditionally begins with a neutralized parade, champagne and photos. When it's time for the pace to pick up, they'll make eight laps around a 9.5 kilometer course, with the sprinters eventually battling for the stage win.

Last year (more below), Olav Kooij edged Kaden Groves and Matteo Moschetti for the stage victory. It was Kooij's second stage win of the 2025 race.

At the same time, 32-year-old Simon Yates was celebrating a career-defining victory. He took the pink jersey off the shoulders of young Mexican standout Isaac del Toro, who had worn it since the end of Stage 9. Del Toro was the overall runner-up and took home the white jersey as the year's best young rider.

Who Won Stage 21 Of The Giro d’Italia In 2025?

As has become tradition at the Grand Tours, the final stage of the race is primarily ceremonial for the General Classification, offering the riders the chance to celebrate three successful weeks, spend a moment of reflection with teammates and pose for photos.

Everything fell into place for 32-year-old Simon Yates, who earned a career-defining victory and redemption in a race was missing a couple of the era's most dominant riders in Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard and saw early departures from a couple of other stars, Primoz Roglic and Juan Ayuso.

An attack during the challenging Stage 20 allowed Yates to finally ride into the pink leader's jersey, worn since Stage 9 by young Mexican standout Isaac del Toro, who finished second overall.

Stage 21 wasn't entirely ceremonial, however, as things got serious toward the end and offered the sprinters once last chance to shine at the Giro d'Italia 2025.

The final stage ended with a sprint finish won by Yates' Team Visma-Lease a bike teammate Olav Kooij, who also won Stage 12. He edged Kaden Groves and Matteo Moschetti Sunday in Stage 21.

Who Won The Giro d’Italia In 2025?

At 32 years old, Great Britain’s Simon Yates made history at the Giro d’Italia, not because of his age, but because he won the race without winning any of the 21 stages. It was the first time that happened since Alberto Contador did so a decade earlier.

It was the second Grand Tour victory for Yates, who won the Vuelta a España in 2018, and it will be his last, as he announced his retirement seven months after winning the Giro.

Yates didn’t secure the coveted pink jersey until Stage 20, when he shot past Richard Carapaz and longtime leader Isaac Del Toro on the Colle delle Finistre climb, one of the most anticipated challenges on the cycling calendar. The same climb broke Yates in his attempt to win the Giro in 2018.

Del Toro, who had ridden in pink for 11 days, might have fallen short in his GC bid, but he became the first athlete from North America to win the Best Young Rider title.

Heading into Stage 20, Del Toro was 43 seconds ahead of Carapaz and 1 minute, 21 seconds in front of Yates. By the end of the day, Yates was nearly four minutes clear of Del Toro, with Carapaz another minute back.

In 2024, Tadej Pogacar won the Giro d’Italia in 2024 as part of a memorable season that saw him become the first rider since 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour de France in the same season.

He then added a win at the 2024 World Championships in Switzerland to became the first cyclist since 1987 to win the Giro, TDF and a world championship in the same season.
