It seems like just yesterday Simon Yates was celebrating the biggest win of his career at the Giro d'Italia 2025, but it already is time to start talking about the 2026 edition of the storied event.
What does the route look like? Which stars will be there for the first Grand Tour of the new season? Will Yates be there to put his title on the line? Will Isaac del Toro be back in search of redemption after finishing second last time?
The answers will begin rolling in like the waves of the peloton, now that the details of the 109th Giro d’Italia have been announced.

The Giro d’Italia 2026 will be a 3,459.2-kilometer journey that begins in Bulgaria for the first time and again concludes in Rome. It will be the 16th time in history, and second time in a row, the race has started outside of Italy. Albania hosted the first three stages in 2025.
The 21-stage Giro, first held in 1909, is known well for its many challenging climbs, and that will be no different in 2026 when the riders face nearly 50,000 meters of altitude gain. The competitors also will be challenged by the variety of terrain, unpredictable weather – due to the time of year and varying altitudes – and an individual time trial.
Monday’s news conference also revealed the details of the 2026 Giro d’Italia Women, which now includes nine stages, instead of eight. It will begin May 30 and conclude June 7. Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini is the defending champion. See the women’s route here.
The Route For The Giro d’Italia 2026
Once again, the first three stages of the Giro d’Italia, and the quest for the coveted pink jersey, will be held abroad, with a ride along the famed Black Sea kicking things off in Bulgaria.
The race heads back into Italy in Stage 4, rolling out from Catanzaro near the tip of the Italian boot to Cosenza, and during the three weeks, the peloton will cruise through nearly every region of the country, along with a day in Switzerland.
The Giro is a true test of versatility over flat roads, grueling climbs, summits and everything else Italy has to offer.
There’s no doubt there will be exciting chases, strategic attacks, sprints, solo performances, cracked riders, crashes, dedicated and decorated fans and so much more, so be sure to tune in.

When Does The Giro d’Italia 2026 Start?
The Giro d’Italia 2025 starts May 8 and will conclude May 31.
The schedule includes 21 stages and three rest days (May 11, May 18, May 25).
Every day, the cyclists start together. Every stage varies in distance and physical demand, and the characteristics of each stage determine what type of rider should excel or how the race should finish.
For example, some stages feature flat finishes, and that means the sprinters likely will be battling for those stage wins.

Who Won The Giro d’Italia In 2025?
Simon Yates crowned his cycling career with a victory in the Giro d'Italia 2025, the Briton putting behind him a series of disappointments to claim the biggest win of his life.
The 32-year-old, who won as a rider for Visma-Lease a bike, was the first man to win the Giro without taking a single stage since Alberto Contador a decade earlier.
Yates came out on top in a Giro missing 2024 winner Tadej Pogacar and Visma teammate Jonas Vingegaard, and which was blown wide open by the early departures of pre-race favorites Primoz Roglic and Juan Ayuso.
Yates finished 3 minutes, 56 seconds ahead of runner-up Isaac del Toro, while 2019 Giro winner Richard Carapaz finished third at 4 minutes, 43 seconds.
From Simon Yates During Giro d’Italia 2026 Route Reveal
Simon Yates: “The emotions I felt at the end of this Giro were incredible, and I really hope to experience them again. In 2018, I had a great race, but also a painful ending with the crisis in the final stage.
“In the years after, I came back hoping to get my revenge, but it never really worked out. Still, in the back of my mind, I always wanted to try again.
“This year, I finally managed to do it. When I saw the Colle delle Finestre on the route, my first reaction was: ‘Oh, not again,’ but I was able to fight back and come up with something special.
“The route of the upcoming edition is very demanding. Blockhaus is a very tough climb, I rode it in 2022, and it can really change the race. The Aosta stage will probably be the key one: it’s extremely hard, but it suits my characteristics quite well.”
This Is What It Means To Win the Giro d’Italia
Simon Yates reflects on his emotional Giro d’Italia 2025 win before Stage 21 in Rome. From disappointment to triumph, here’s what it means to wear the maglia rosa.
