Stage 15 of the Giro d’Italia 2026 was entirely flat, and with the weather finally cooperating, it couldn't have been a more ideal opportunity for the sprinters to fight for the win.
However, a four-rider breakaway denied them the chance at the podium.
The quartet rode free and maintained the gap long enough for them to have their own mini sprint, which was won by Norway's Fredrik Dversnes Lavik, giving Uno-X Mobility its first win at the Giro d'Italia. It also was the fastest stage in the 90-year history of the race at more than 51 kmh.
Now, everyone will have a day to rest and regroup, before the event returns for a challenging day of climbing in Stage 16.

Dversnes was joined in the breakaway and followed over the line by a trio of Italians - Mirco Maestri, Martin Marcellusi and Mattia Bais.
The first sprint specialist to cross the line was France's Paul Magnier, who finished fifth and was able to reclaim the ciclamino points jersey. His leading total was built with wins in Stage 1 and Stage 3.
The GC battle remains unchanged, with pre-race favorite Jonas Vingegaard holding a lead of 2 minutes, 26 seconds over Eulálio. Felix Gall is third, another 24 seconds back.
There won't be any easing back into the swing of competition after the final rest day of this year's Giro d'Italia.
Stage 16 is on the shorter side at 113 kilometers, but it's brutal, offering five categorized climbs and a final 3 kilometers that average 8% gradient.
And while the trek might be extra tough for some, it's probably the best way for new leader Jonas Vingegaard to defend the pink jersey after the rest day and potentially take more time from the rest of the field.
He climbed his way into the top spot during a climb-heavy Stage 14 on Saturday, and this will give him another chance to show his strengths and versatility.

Stage 16 of the Giro d'Italia 2026 might be on the shorter side, but it's jam-packed with challenging climbs through the mountains of Switzerland. The area hasn't appeared on the Giro route since 2015.
The day begins with a gradual incline that is followed by a 22-kilometer circuit the riders will face twice. The circuit includes the first two of the day's five categorized climbs. While Stage 15 only reached 200 meters of altitude gain, Stage 16 will hit 3,000.
There's a deep decent after the fourth climb, but that just leads into the biggest challenge of the day - a 12-kilometer Category 1 climb to the finish line. The last 3 kilometers of the journey will reach 13% gradient, while averaging 8%.

Who Won The Giro d’Italia In 2025?
At 32 years old, Great Britain’s Simon Yates made history at the Giro d’Italia, not because of his age, but because he won the race without winning any of the 21 stages. It was the first time that happened since Alberto Contador did so a decade earlier.
It was the second Grand Tour victory for Yates, who won the Vuelta a España in 2018, and it will be his last, as he announced his retirement seven months after winning the Giro.
Yates didn’t secure the coveted pink jersey until Stage 20, when he shot past Richard Carapaz and longtime leader Isaac Del Toro on the Colle delle Finistre climb, one of the most anticipated challenges on the cycling calendar. The same climb broke Yates in his attempt to win the Giro in 2018.
Del Toro, who had ridden in pink for 11 days, might have fallen short in his GC bid, but he became the first athlete from North America to win the Best Young Rider title.
Heading into Stage 20, Del Toro was 43 seconds ahead of Carapaz and 1 minute, 21 seconds in front of Yates. By the end of the day, Yates was nearly four minutes clear of Del Toro, with Carapaz another minute back.
In 2024, Tadej Pogacar won the Giro d’Italia in 2024 as part of a memorable season that saw him become the first rider since 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour de France in the same season.
He then added a win at the 2024 World Championships in Switzerland to became the first cyclist since 1987 to win the Giro, TDF and a world championship in the same season.
