Alec Segaert didn't perform as well as he'd hoped in the lone time trial at the Giro d’Italia 2026, but he used those same skills to secure a win two days later in Stage 12.
Segaert attacked late in the 175-kilometer ride from Imperia to Novi Ligure, and his perfectly timed launch denied the sprinters the opportunity to fight for the stage victory.
The win was the first for Segaert in a Grand Tour and the first for his Bahrain-Victorious team at this year's Giro, though his teammate, Afonso Eulálio, has been wearing the pink leader's jersey since claiming it in Stage 5.

Toon Aerts finished second in Stage 12 on Thursday as one of the many sprinters who nearly caught Segaert, before finishing three seconds behind him. Stage 2 winner Thomas Silva was third, Ethan Vernon was fourth and Jasper Stuyven finished fifth.
In the General Classification, Eulálio picked up six bonus seconds in the mid-race sprint, and he now leads GC favorite Jonas Vingegaard by 33 seconds. Thymen Arensman is third overall, just over two minutes behind Eulálio.
As the Giro rolls into Alessandria for Stage 13 on Friday, there will be a hometown hero on the starting line looking to collect another stage victory 189 kilometers later in his home city of Verbania.
Filippo Ganna, who won this year's time trial in Stage 10, was born in Verbania in 1996 and still lives there.
The route runs 189 kilometers from Alessandria to Verbania, and it's almost entirely flat. However, it gets a little bumpy and tricky in the final 30 kilometers, and that definitely will affect the outcome. Will the sprinters survive the late climbs and challenge for the podium? Or will the winner come from a breakaway?
Stage 13 is scheduled to begin at 6:15 a.m. Eastern and should conclude around 11:05 a.m. EDT.
For viewers in Canada, FloBikes coverage of Stage 13 will begin at 6:30 a.m. Eastern.
Here’s what to know about Stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia 2026, a mostly flat 189-kilometer journey from Alessandria to Verbania:
Stage 13: Giro d’Italia 2026
Stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia 2026 is on the longer side at 189 kilometers, but it's almost entirely flat until the last 25-30 kilometers, when the terrain gets bumpy and challenging. That's also where the riders will encounter the majority of the 1,400 meters of elevation gain.
The journey from Alessandria to Verbania will take them through a handful of major towns, where they'll be up against all the usual obstacles that come with city riding.
The scenic ride along the shore of Lake Maggiore will be followed by a pair of categorized climbs - Category 4 and Category 3. The latter will span 4.7 kilometers and average a 7.1% gradient, including a less-challenging start.
After the climbs, the riders will be back along the lakeshore for a decent and a flatter finish.
The main question is about whether the climbs are tough enough to derail the sprinters, while the layout also could see the winner come from a breakaway.
All eyes definitely will be on Ganna, who was born in Verbania and still lives there.
The last time a stage of the Giro finished in his hometown was more than a decade ago in 2015, with the highlight being a much tougher climb after a flat start.
Verbania originally was about manufacturing and industry, but having the lake right there has helped it also become a tourist destination.
The day's start in Alessandria showcase an area with about 800 more years of history that has a rich military background.

Who Won The Giro d’Italia In 2025?
At 32 years old, Great Britain’s Simon Yates made history at the Giro d’Italia, not because of his age, but because he won the race without winning any of the 21 stages. It was the first time that happened since Alberto Contador did so a decade earlier.
It was the second Grand Tour victory for Yates, who won the Vuelta a España in 2018, and it will be his last, as he announced his retirement seven months after winning the Giro.
Yates didn’t secure the coveted pink jersey until Stage 20, when he shot past Richard Carapaz and longtime leader Isaac Del Toro on the Colle delle Finistre climb, one of the most anticipated challenges on the cycling calendar. The same climb broke Yates in his attempt to win the Giro in 2018.
Del Toro, who had ridden in pink for 11 days, might have fallen short in his GC bid, but he became the first athlete from North America to win the Best Young Rider title.
Heading into Stage 20, Del Toro was 43 seconds ahead of Carapaz and 1 minute, 21 seconds in front of Yates. By the end of the day, Yates was nearly four minutes clear of Del Toro, with Carapaz another minute back.
In 2024, Tadej Pogacar won the Giro d’Italia in 2024 as part of a memorable season that saw him become the first rider since 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour de France in the same season.
He then added a win at the 2024 World Championships in Switzerland to became the first cyclist since 1987 to win the Giro, TDF and a world championship in the same season.
A Late Attack Just Shocked The Giro d'Italia 2026 Stage 12
In Novi Ligure, after Stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia 2026 exploded in the final kilometers.
Exhausted sprint teams could not respond after a brutal day driven by Movistar, allowing Belgian rider Alec Segaert to attack with 3.4 kilometers remaining and solo to victory.
We hear from the 23-year-old stage winner, Victor Campenaerts and the sprinters left behind, including Jonathan Milan, while Afonso Eulálio adds more time to his overall Giro lead over Jonas Vingegaard.
