The riders avoided mishaps for the majority of the stage, while Igor Arrieta and Afonso Eulálio were able to break away and turn the action into a two-man battle for the stage win and the pink leader's jersey, though chaos ensued in the final 14 kilometers.
Arrieta claimed the stage for the first Grand Tour win of his career, and Eulálio will be wearing pink when they head into Stage 6 on Thursday.

As they approached the final stretch in Stage 5, Arrieta slipped and crashed coming out of a turn and thought his chance at a second consecutive win for UAE Team Emirates had gotten away.
However, not far down the road, Eulálio also suffered a crash and allowed Arrieta another opportunity, though he nearly let that get away, too.
To potentially avoid another fall, Arrieta turned toward a section of road that was blocked off, and the brief mishap allowed Eulálio to pull away once again.
Arrieta was able to regain his composure and track down Eulálio in the final meters to take the victory. They finished nearly a minute ahead of third-place finisher Thomas Silva, who won Stage 2.
Arrieta's teammate Jhonatan Narváez won Stage 4 on Tuesday to earn some redemption for the UAE squad, which was battered early in the race and saw multiple team members forced to abandon.
When the riders return to action for a 142-kilometer ride in Stage 6, Eulálio will be in pink with a lead of 2 minutes, 51 seconds over Arrieta. Christian Scaroni is third at 3 minutes, 34 seconds behind Eulálio.
After a day of significant climbing and elevation, Stage 6 will offer some reprieve, as this stage is short and relatively flat.
Fans won't have as much time to watch their favorite riders, but anyone who loves world history will be glued to their screens during the ride from Paestum to Naples.
Paestum's has a Greek foundation and a strong Roman influence, too, and the area features remains of temples and architecture from both, dedicated to their respective gods and offering places for locals to gather and worship for thousands of years. The area also features the Roman Forum, a famed amphitheater, painted tombs, countless statues, art, museums and so much more.
But, ultimately, this isn't a history lesson, it's a bike race - and one that belongs to Eulálio. At least for right now.

Stage 6 of the Giro d'Italia 2026 brings the event to the western side of Italy for a 142-kilometer ride up the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea from the ancient city of Paestum, across the plain around Mount Vesuvius and onto the wide, paved roads of Naples.
There's one Category 4 climb early in the day, but the route is relatively flat overall, and the second half of the stage will be in more of a city setting, so the biggest obstacles might be fans, road furniture and even the occasional pothole.
Just before the finish, the course will bend to the left and brings the riders into a slight incline that reaches about 4% gradient. A couple of bends in the other direction lead into a straight finish on a wide cobbled road.
Naples has become a familiar host city for the Giro and will be welcoming a stage for the fifth consecutive year, though the exact layout will be different. The first of the recent visits was won via breakaway, while the next three featured sprint finishes. Either one is possible, but the latter seems more likely due to the flat finish.

Who Won The Giro d’Italia In 2025?
At 32 years old, Great Britain’s Simon Yates made history at the Giro d’Italia, not because of his age, but because he won the race without winning any of the 21 stages. It was the first time that happened since Alberto Contador did so a decade earlier.
It was the second Grand Tour victory for Yates, who won the Vuelta a España in 2018, and it will be his last, as he announced his retirement seven months after winning the Giro.
Yates didn’t secure the coveted pink jersey until Stage 20, when he shot past Richard Carapaz and longtime leader Isaac Del Toro on the Colle delle Finistre climb, one of the most anticipated challenges on the cycling calendar. The same climb broke Yates in his attempt to win the Giro in 2018.
Del Toro, who had ridden in pink for 11 days, might have fallen short in his GC bid, but he became the first athlete from North America to win the Best Young Rider title.
Heading into Stage 20, Del Toro was 43 seconds ahead of Carapaz and 1 minute, 21 seconds in front of Yates. By the end of the day, Yates was nearly four minutes clear of Del Toro, with Carapaz another minute back.
In 2024, Tadej Pogacar won the Giro d’Italia in 2024 as part of a memorable season that saw him become the first rider since 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour de France in the same season.
