History-making Eritrean Biniam Girmay will leave Intermarché-Wanty before next season, the Belgian cycling team announced on Friday.

The 25-year-old joined the outfit in 2021 before becoming the first Black African to win a Grand Tour stage at the following year's Giro d’Italia.

Last year, Girmay made history again by clinching the Tour de France’s green jersey after winning three sprint stages.

Biniam Girmay Thanks Intermarche-Wanty For ‘Wonderful Journey’

"It has been a wonderful journey for me with Intermarché-Wanty," Girmay said, without mentioning his future team. "I am still grateful for the belief they showed in me five years ago and for giving me the chance to become a WorldTour rider.

"Now it is time for a new chapter. I want to thank everyone at Intermarché-Wanty for the past five seasons," he added, despite having a contract until 2028.

Girmay has been linked with a move to NSN Cycling, the team formerly known as Israel-Premier Tech.

From Giro Glory To Tour de France Success

After making history in the 10th stage of the Giro in 2022, Girmay was forced to withdraw from the remainder of the race after sustaining an eye injury caused by a cork fired from a prosecco bottle during his victory celebration.

For next season, Intermarché-Wanty will merge with Lotto, with their first major race of the year at the Tour Down Under in Australia, beginning on January 20.
