The Gravel Worlds 2025 Are Wide Open

Is gravel racing the fastest-growing discipline in competitive cycling?

That certainly does seem to be the case, and the road-mountain bike hybrid will be on full display this week with the 2025 edition of the UCI Gravel World Championships.

This year marks the fourth edition of the event and will be the first time it has been held on Dutch soil, with the world’s best on the diverse terrain taking the cycling spotlight Oct. 11-12.

The 2025 UCI Gravel Worlds will be held in the Zuid-Limburg region of the Netherlands and will be highlighted by a pair of high-profile races – Women Elite and Men Elite – where the champions will earn the year’s coveted rainbow jerseys.

The event originally was set to be held in Nice, France, a location very familiar with top-tier cycling, but the change in location shouldn’t take away anything from a history/tradition perspective.

The Zuid-Limburg region has hosted many elite events, including the 2018 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships and five editions of the UCI Road World Championships, dating back almost a century.

If anything, the unique terrain of the area will provide an unforgettable experience for participants and fans.

The inaugural UCI Gravel World Championships in 2022, and the 2023 event, both were held in Italy, while the 2024 edition took place in Flanders, Belgium.

The 2025 UCI Gravel Worlds comes on the heels of a successful UCI Road World Championships, which recently was held on the content of Africa for the first time.

Unlike the Road Worlds, the upcoming race will be contested primarily on unpaved roads, challenging the competitors across gravel, forest, farms roads, dirt roads, local paths, cobblestones and even some water.

Entrants at the elite level will be representing their home countries.

The elite women’s race, 131-kilometer trek, will kick off the weekend, with competition getting underway Saturday at 11 a.m. local time (CEST)/5 a.m. Eastern. FloBikes coverage will begin at 7:30 am. EDT.

The elite men will take center stage for their 181-kilometer journey Sunday at 11:45 a.m. CEST/5:45 a.m. EDT. FloBikes coverage again will start at 7:30 a.m. EDT.

In all, the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships will feature the two elite races and 13 gender- and age-based races.

All of the races will be run on a 50-kilometer circuit that will challenge the riders across the various types of terrain, past iconic landmarks and to areas of elevation that will exceed 500 meters.

The winners are considered the world champions and get to wear the rainbow jersey during all competitions of the same discipline during the following season.

The official entry lists for the elite races at the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships can be found here.

The women’s race will feature defending champion Marianne Vos of the Netherlands and 2023 winner Katarzyna Niewiadoma of Poland, but inaugural champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot of France is not scheduled to compete.

The men’s field will include the first two winners – Gianni Vermeersch of Belgium (2022) and Matej Mohoric of Slovenia (2023), while reigning champion Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands is noticeably absent from the list.
