Unlike the recent UCI Road World Championships, held on the continent of Africa for the first time, the upcoming event will be contested primarily on unpaved roads, challenging the competitors across gravel, forest, farms roads, dirt roads, local paths, cobblestones and even some water.
The elite women’s race, 131-kilometer challenge, will kick off the weekend, with competition getting underway Saturday at 11 a.m. local time (CEST)/5 a.m. Eastern. FloBikes coverage will begin at 7:30 am. Eastern.
The elite men will battle for the rainbow jersey across 181 kilometers Sunday at 11:45 a.m. CEST/5:45 a.m. EDT. FloBikes coverage again will start at 7:30 a.m. EDT.
In all, the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships will feature the two elite races and 13 gender- and age-based races, all using a 50-kilometer circuit over various types of terrain and elevation.
The entry list for the elite races was revealed Wednesday.
The women’s race will feature defending champion Marianne Vos of the Netherlands and 2023 winner Katarzyna Niewiadoma of Poland, but inaugural champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot of France is not scheduled to compete.
The men’s field will include the first two winners – Gianni Vermeersch of Belgium (2022) and Matej Mohoric of Slovenia (2023), while reigning champion Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands is noticeably absent from the list.
