Since 1984, Louisville, KY, has held a special place in the fabric of BMX. For more than four decades, Derby City BMX has been the backdrop to national-level racing, and 2025 was no exception—delivering another unforgettable Labor Day weekend.

Fans packed the facility, eyes locked on the eight-meter hill as racers hit top speeds, each lap leaving the crowd guessing who would claim the top honors.

Vet Pro opened the show with a battle of champions: the season’s front-runner Jeff Upshaw facing off against defending champ Barry Nobles. Nobles grabbed the early advantage, taking the Answer BMX Holeshot Award into turn two. But the veteran drama was far from over. Down the third straight, Upshaw seized his chance with a clean move in turn three, powering past Nobles and charging to the finish line for the win.

From the legends to the future stars, the ABA Futures classes kept the energy high. In the Women’s Futures, the budding rivalry between Alexis Alden and Derin Merten lit up the first straight, with both entering turn one side-by-side. Merten’s inside line gave her the edge, but the battle made it clear their duels are pushing the class to new levels. In the Men’s Futures, Ethan Popovich found his rhythm early and never let go. Supercross BMX’s Gaige Gomolicke used his long stride to stay in contention, but Popovich’s explosive first straight and track speed proved unbeatable, adding yet another win to his growing season tally.

As the sun set and the lights came on, anticipation peaked for the Pro mains. In Women’s Pro, Molly Simpson carried her all-day form straight into the gate. Carving clean through turn one with Answer BMX’s Lauren Reynolds on her wheel, Simpson unleashed a flawless second straight to stretch out her lead and secure another USA BMX victory, further cementing her reputation as one of the sport’s brightest stars.

The Men’s Pro main brought 32 contenders down to an elite final eight. Nerves turned into horsepower as the gate dropped. From lane three, rookie sensation Josh Jolly launched into the lead, holding off newly crowned World No. 3, Eddy Clerte. With the crowd on its feet, Jolly powered away to claim his third win of the season—sending a clear message that his title run toward Tulsa is officially underway.

And that was only day one. With the stage set and momentum building, all eyes now turn to Sunday’s racing. From fierce amateur showdowns to the Pro classes chasing another shot at Derby City glory, expect even bigger battles, faster laps, and unforgettable finishes. Don’t miss a moment—day two of the Derby City Nationals is about to raise the bar even higher.
