Critérium du Dauphiné: This Isn't A Warm-up

There aren’t many cycling races Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogacar hasn’t won, but the Critérium du Dauphiné is one of them.

The 26-year-old will get the chance to change that this month when he competes in the 2025 edition of the race from June 8-15. In his first appearance in 2020, he finished fourth in the General Classification.

The event traditionally covers about 1,200 kilometers, taking riders on a journey across the Dauphiné region of southeast France. Once again, there will be seven stages ranging from 131.6 kilometers to 207.2 kilometers, along with one individual time trial.

The first stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2025 will get underway at 4:10 a.m. Eastern, with FloBikes coverage for viewers in Canada beginning at 7:05 a.m. EDT.

Though the recent Giro d’Italia 2025, won by Simon Yates on June 1, served as a nice appetizer for cycling fans, Dauphiné will be the ultimate warm-up for many riders who are putting the final touches on their preparation for the Tour de France in July.

The eight-day Critérium du Dauphiné, which does share some roads and climbs with the much longer TDF, will test them across a variety of landscapes – five hilly stages, two days climbing in the mountains, a time trial and even one summit finish.

Among those scheduled to compete are the top three finishers from last year’s Tour de France – Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel. However, though we know the event will include 22 teams (as of May 28), an official entry list has not yet been revealed.

This year’s Critérium du Dauphiné is the 77th in history, with the inaugural edition taking place in 1947.

Five riders have won the race three times. The most recent to achieve the feat was Great Britain’s Chris Froome, who won in 2013, 2015 and 2016.

An additional 13 riders have won twice, including reigning champion Primoz Roglic (2022, 2024). Lance Armstrong (2002, 2003) and Levi Leipheimer (2006) had their titles voided.

Of the 73 official titles, France tops the list with 30 victories, followed by Spain (10) and Great Britain (eight).

Last year, Roglic, also Slovenian, won the race with a total time of 25:35:40, finishing eight seconds ahead of Matteo Jorgenson of the United States and 36 seconds ahead of Canada’s Derek Gee.

Vingegaard won in 2023 and went on to win the Tour de France for the second consecutive year.
