Giro d'Italia 2025 Stage 20 Preview

Stage 19 of the Giro d'Italia 2025 was the challenging test everyone expected, and while France's Nicolas Prodhomme used the day to secure the first Grand Tour stage win of his career, overall leader Isaac del Toro proved he's truly ready for the spotlight by holding off veteran Richard Carapaz to remain in the coveted pink jersey.

There's one more grueling mountain stage ahead in Saturday's State 20, and that's where this year's champion should be determined, as the event's final stage typically is more celebratory and ceremonial.

Del Toro leads Carapaz by 43 seconds. Can he keep the 2019 Giro d'Italia winner at bay for one more tough day of climbing?

The ongoing duel between Del Toro and Carapaz saw them finishing second and third, respectively, behind Prodhomme in Stage 19 on Friday, nearly a minute behind. Damiano Caruso and Brandon McNulty finished fourth and fifth.

In the General Classification, Simon Yates remains in third place, 1 minute, 21 seconds behind Del Toro. Derek Gee is fourth (2 minutes, 27 seconds), and Caruso is fifth (3 minutes, 36 seconds).

Stage 20 will be another five-star challenge for the riders and is one of the longer stages of this year's race at more than 200 kilometers.

For viewers in Canada, FloBikes coverage of Stage 20 will begin at 4:40 a.m. Eastern and is expected to conclude around 10:40 a.m. EDT.

Stage 20: Giro d’Italia 2025

This is it! One final grueling mountain stage for just about everything and likely where we find out the winner of this year's Giro d'Italia.

This will be a 205-kilometer trek from Verrès to Sestrière that begins flat and then challenges the riders with climbs that only get tougher as they proceed.

The beast of the day will be the Colle delle Finestre, which averages 9.2% and reaches 14%. First there's pavement, then there's gravel.

The stage will end with a steady climb at about 5% on a well-paved road.

The last time the Giro finished a stage in Sestrière and the Colle delle Finestre was 2018, and it didn't disappoint. Will there be drama again in 2025?

Tadej Pogacar won Stage 20 of the Giro d'Italia 2024. It was his sixth stage win of the year and all but locked up the overall win with a stage to go. Have we mentioned yet that 2024 was his debut at the historic race?

Pogacar won Stage 20 by more than two minutes ahead of Valentin Paret-Peintre, Daniel Martinez, Antonio Tiberi and Einer Rubio.

When he wrapped up the win on the 184-kilometer stage, he was nearly 10 minutes ahead of Daniel Martinez in the overall standings. That meant the final ride of the year was going to be more of a ceremonial procession, barring a catastrophe.
