Giro d'Italia 2025 Stage 9: Gravel Hell

As the climbing became more challenging in Stage 8 of the Giro d'Italia 2025, the whole race got turned upside down.

Australian Luke Plapp escaped with 45 kilometers left to go, and he cruised across the finish line for the biggest win of his professional career, 38 seconds ahead of the next finisher.

The day's chaos also saw a new leader atop the General Classification standings, veteran Diego Ulissi of Italy, who leads by 12 seconds.

How can Stage 9 top that? It'll try by testing the riders with almost 30 kilometers of gravel!

Plapp's monumental win Saturday saw him finish ahead of Wilco Kelderman (38 seconds), Diego Ulissi (38 seconds), Igor Arrieta (1 minute, 22 seconds) and Nicolas Prodhomme (1 minute, 35 seconds).

Ulissi's performance helped him into the top spot in the GC rankings ahead of fellow Italian Lorenzo Fortunato and 17 seconds ahead of overnight leader Primoz Roglic

It had been 86 stages since an Italian led the race -- Alessandro De Marchi was the last to wear pink just over four years ago - and Ulissi will have it on his shoulders in Stage 9 on Sunday.

For viewers in Canada, FloBikes coverage of Stage 9 will begin at 6:50 a.m. Eastern and is expected to conclude around 11:35 a.m. EDT.

Stage 9: Giro d’Italia 2025

Stage 9 of the Giro d'Italia 2025, a 181-kilometer journey from Gubbio to Siena offers a nod to the recent Strade Bianche, won by Tadej Pogacar in March

The Strade Bianche, a ride across the Tuscany region of Italy first held in 2007, features a lot of challenging gravel, which will not be as prevalent for Stage 9 of the Giro - but there will be some.

It is important to note, however, that the finish of Stage 9 at the Giro will be identical to what the riders experienced in March.

The day will begin with about 50 relatively easy kilometers, before the climbs and rolling terrain amp things up.

Gravel won't be a factor until the second half of the race, but it will be there (almost 30 kilometers) - in five sectors - later combining the challenge of the gravel with increasing steepness.

Once the gravel and climbs are behind them, the riders will have another 14 kilometers heading into the finish line. The last 4 kilometers could be considered "brutal," as there's a 500-meter climb at 12.4% that hits 16% for a moment.

Anyone who survives that climb will have a few more twists and turns before finally crossing the line.
