Pedersen won three of the first six stages and was a favorite to win Stage 6, but injuries he sustained as one of the day's crash casualties left him out of the sprint finish won by Australian Kaden Groves.
The day was wet and chaotic, and a massive mid-stage crash left many riders bruised and battered, while others were forced to abandon the race, including 2022 champion Jai Hindley.
Belgium's Milan Fretin and Frenchman Paul Magnier finished second and third, respectively on Wednesday's 227-kilometer trek.
In the General Classification standings, 2023 Giro champion Primoz Roglic is the first rider behind Pedersen. He is followed by Mathias Vacek (24 seconds behind Pedersen), Brandon McNulty (31 seconds) and Isaac Del Toro (32 seconds).

When it finally is time to hit the homestretch, a ride from Tagliacozzo to the village of Marsia, competitors will encounter a 12.6-kilometer ascent with an average gradient of 5.4%. This climb is being featured in the Giro for the first time.
And, as if the first 165 kilometers weren't going to be hard enough, the last 3 kilometers offer more gradients in the double digits.
