Giro d'Italia 2025 Stage 5 Preview

As the Giro d'Italia 2025 arrived in Italy on Tuesday, riders faced a relatively easy day that ended in sprint for the line.

Wednesday's Stage 5 will start out pretty flat, but the intensity and incline will increase toward the end of the stage, including a 10% ramp in the final 3 kilometers. It is categorized by race organizers as a two-star level of difficulty, compared to the one star the riders faced in Stage 4.

Denmark's Mads Pedersen still is the man to beat and will remain in the pink jersey for another day. He's seven seconds ahead of 2023 Giro champion and race favorite Primoz Roglic.

On Tuesday, the first stage of the year in Italy after a three-stage debut in Albania, 23-year-old Casper van Uden picked up his first win of 2025 and his first career Grand Tour victory. He is competing in the Giro d'Italia for the first time.

The Stage 4 sprint ended with an all-Dutch podium, with Olav Kooij and Maikel Zijlaard finishing second and third, respectively.

In his push for a third win in four stages, overall leader Pedersen finished fourth. He was able to maintain the lead and will wear the pink jersey in Stage 5. He remains seven seconds ahead of Roglic, who picked up two seconds in the day's intermediate sprint.

Mathias Vacek is third (14 seconds), Brandon McNulty is fourth (21 seconds) and Isaac Del Toro is fifth (22 seconds).
