The second Tour de France Femmes begins July 23 in Clermont Ferrand and will last for eight days before ending July 30 in the southwestern city of Pau, sitting along the Pyrenees.

Defending Tour de Femme winner Annemiek van Vleuten will once again go head-to-head with last year's second-place finisher Demi Vollering

Even though van Vleuten is seen as one of the favorites to win the Tour, it’s no guarantee. Vollering is currently the No. 1-ranked women’s cyclist in the world, according to the UCI standings.

What Is The 2023 Tour de France Femmes Route?

Unlike last year, the tour won’t go through Paris.

The Tour will start in the central city of Clermont-Ferrand before riders work their way down through the Pyrenees mountains. The race will finish with a time trial in stage 8 that conclude in Pau.

Another way the tour differs from last year is that most of the stages aren’t mountainous, instead this year they are primarily hilly or flat. The one exception coming in stage 7, where the finish line is located at the iconic men’s Tour de France location Col du Tourmalet in the Pyrenees.

That climb has an elevation of 2,115 meters.

Who To Keep An Eye Out For In The Tour de France Femmes

Although van Vleuten and Vollering are seen as the two big favorites, there are still many talented cyclists who have a shot to win.

That includes last year's stage three winner Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, and Kasia Niewiadoma, who finished in third place in 2022. Elisa Longo Borghini could be a challenger to van Vleuten after winning the 2023 English Women’s Tour.

Who Won The Tour de Femmes In 2022?

Last year's race was a two-woman battle between van Vleuten and Vollering with not much separation throughout the race.

In stages 7 and 8 van Vleuten started to pull away and won both stages, helping her secure the win.

Van Vleuten finished the Tour with an advantage of around 4 minutes over Vollering and 6.5 minutes over third place Niewiadoma.
