Mark Cavendish has won 30 stages of the Tour de France. The great Eddy Merckx holds the record at 34. For many years, Cavendish was nearly unbeatable in a bunch sprint, so much so that it seemed inevitable that the stage win record would be broken.

However, Cavendish's career tanked in recent years. Numerous crashes shook his confidence, while a drawn out battle with Epstein–Barr virus kept Cavendish from winning a single race for over three years.
