Most Italian riders dream of being the next great climber to wear the maglia rosa. Matteo Trentin however is a rider that does things a bit differently.

Not only has he been the token Italian classics hopeful of his generation, but he was for many years the only rider on Mitchelton-Scott focused on winning the classics. While Matthew Hayman may argue that final point, Trentin made the move to CCC in 2020 to team up with Greg Van Avermaet in a bid for greater support in the classics.

This Belgian and Italian power couple was promising to be quite the alliance prior to the coronavirus outbreak.

Fans will have to wait a bit longer to see the duo in action, but Trentin's results the past two seasons were convincing enough to land him in the silver medal position on FloBikes best Italian rankings.

Relive Trentin's grippy ride to beat Mathieu van der Poel in the 2018 European Championships and his near miss at the 2019 Yorkshire World Championships.
