The Giro d’Italia may be known as “the toughest race in the world’s most beautiful place,” but it’s not confining itself to just one continent for its 101st edition.

For the first time ever in a Grand Tour, one of the three biggest races in cycling will get started outside of Europe as the 2018 Giro d’Italia opens with a trio stages in Israel, beginning with an individual time trial prologue in Jerusalem on May 4.

However, that might not be the only piece of history made once the race finishes in Rome three weeks later.

Team Sky’s Chris Froome, who won his fourth Tour de France and first Vuelta Espana in 2017, is seeking to reach even more rarified air by winning his first Giro d’Italia—thereby becoming the owner of all three Grand Tour jerseys (pink, yellow, red) simultaneously.

While Froome continues to deal with a legal battle over doping charges from his Vuelta win, he’s expected to face a stiff challenge for the Maglia Rosa from defending champion and time trial specialist Tom Dumoulin.

The Team Sunweb leader came from behind to win the 2017 Giro in thrilling fashion after trailing by 53 seconds heading into the ITT finale in Rome. This year, Dumoulin will have the opportunity to build time on his rivals right away on stage 1 with a 9.7km time trial in Jerusalem.

If he repeats as the Giro winner, Dumoulin would join the legendary Miguel Indurain (1992-93) and Eddy Merckx (1972-44) as the only back-to-back champions in more than 50 years.

Other top GC contenders include Thibaut Pinout (Groupama-FDJ), Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana), and Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates).

After three days of racing in Israel, the 2018 Giro d’Italia makes its way back to home soil for an additional 18 stages. Altogether, the race will travel 3,562.9km with 44,000 vertical meters of climbing and is comprised of two ITTs, seven potential sprint stages, five medium difficulty stages, and eight stages with summit finishes.
