In April of 2017, Tom Boonen crossed the finish line at Paris-Roubaix for the final time, and officially retired from cycling. Two weeks later, he lined up at the start of another race — this time driving a car.

For years, Boonen had been fascinated with race cars. Well before he announced his retirement, he'd participated in track days at the Spa and Zolder race courses in Belgium. But his team wouldn't allow him to compete in car races while under contract as one of the world's best classics riders.

Following his final Roubaix, Boonen became a full-fledged race car driver.

We sat down with the former world champion at the final event in the 24H Series endurance race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
