Brandon McNulty Becomes First American In 33 Years To Win Elite Men's Road Race At UCI Road Worlds

For the first time in more than three decades, an American rider stood atop the podium after the Men Elite Road Race at the UCI Road World Championships.

Brandon McNulty, a time trial world champion as a junior in 2016, broke free Sunday in Montreal with 32 kilometers remaining in the men’s road race and rode solo to the gold medal and rainbow jersey, 13 seconds ahead of Australia’s Michael Matthews and Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands.

It’s is the fourth win for the United States in the men’s event and first since 1993. Greg LeMond won in 1983 and 1989, and Lance Armstrong won in 1993.
