Here, we provide three tips to help you in picking your lineup for this year’s Giro d’Italia.
1. Study The Course
Every year the route of this three-week stage race changes, so make sure you know what type of rider will have the advantage. This year’s course is loaded with mountains, so make sure you load up on climbers—especially the riders who can win out of those small groups.
Think about Michael Woods (EF Education First-Drapac p/b Cannondale) and Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott), along with riders like Diego Ulissi (UAE-Team Emirates) for the more intermediate stages.
With only two stages and 45 kilometers of time trial, the pure time trialists like Tony Martin (Team Katusha-Alpecin) and Jos Van Emden (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) won’t have as many opportunities, so be careful in investing too many credits on racers who excel against the clock.
On the other hand, the sprinters do have a handful of stages to target, and Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) and Sam Bennett (BORA-Hansgrohe) look to be head and shoulders above the rest. It’s worth investing in one of the big two if you can fit into your budget.
2. Who’s On Form?
Research the last month of racing to see who’s been building fitness and seems to be peaking at the right time.
Riders like Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Pro team) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) were looking dynamic at the Tour of the Alps, while Wout Poels (Team Sky) and Fabio Aru (UAE-Team Emirates) have struggled in their lead-up to this year’s race.
Momentum is important to a rider, and if you’re looking for an advantage then keep that in mind.
3. Diversify
Racing a grand tour is unpredictable. Unfortunately, crashes, illness, and mechanicals are a part of racing, so don’t be stuck with resting all your hopes on just a few riders.
Plan on taking a more even approach to your team by selecting both Louis Meintjes (Dimension Data) and Johan Esteban Chaves (Mitchelton-Scott), for example, instead of Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb), which would cost you the same amount of credits.
If you invest heavily in just a few riders, be prepared to live on the edge over the course of the 21 stages.
