The 2026 Tour de France is an important race for Tadej Pogačar.

Having made a name for himself, Tadej Pogačar has made a lot of history as one of the best cyclists of this generation. He enters this year's race with a goal to achieve something that has only been won by four cyclists.

Pogacar has famously won the Tour de France four times in his career so far, winning it in 2020, 2021, 2024, and 2025. With the 2026 race beginning July 4 in Barcelona, Pogačar is definitely on a mission to secure the yellow jersey and join the sport's most elite club.

Four Riders Who Have Won Five Tour de France Titles

Winning the Tour de France once is a remarkable achievement. Winning it five times is reserved for cycling royalty.

Only four riders have reached the milestone:

  • Jacques Anquetil  (1957, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964)
  • Eddy Merckx  (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974)
  • Bernard Hinault (1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1985)
  • Miguel Induráin (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995)

Induráin was the last rider to have won five Tour de France titles from 1991 to 1995. More than three decades later, Pogačar has the opportunity to become just the fifth rider in history to win the Tour de France five times.

Why Tadej Pogačar Is Favored Again

Pogačar has established himself as one of the most complete riders of his generation.

"He excels in nearly every discipline. He is capable of winning mountain stages, dominating individual time trials, attacking from long range and outsprinting rivals on steep, punchy finishes" FloBikes reporter Gregor Brown said.

Pogačar's versatility has made him a consistent threat in both Grand Tours and one-day Monument races.

The most dangerous part of Pogačar is his unpredictability. He can transform what appears to be a routine stage into a race-defining moment with a single acceleration, forcing rivals to react instantly or risk losing valuable time.

The Route To Test Every Contender

The 2026 Tour de France will begin on July 4 in Barcelona with a new team time trial before the race heads north to the Pyrenees, where the first major mountain battles are expected.

The challenging route then continues through will continue through the Massif Central before the late-race stages could reshape the general classification. The Tour concludes in Paris with the return of Montmartre before riders sprint to the finish on the Champs-Élysées.

The demanding parcours gives Pogačar several opportunities to separate himself from the competition, particularly in the high mountains where he has often launched decisive attacks.

Challengers Ready to Take On Pogačar

There is no doubt that riders will be looking to stop Pogačar on his chase to his fifth title this summer.

Amongst his biggest challengers is Jonas Vingegaard, who is chasing for his third Tour de France title. Rising French star Paul Seixas will be among the riders to watch as he looks to make an impact this Tour. Definitely setting the tone for one of the most competitive Tours in recent years.

If Pogačar captures a fifth Tour de France title, he will cement his legacy as one of cycling's all-time greats.
