The 2026 Tour de France will open in Barcelona with a new-look team time trial that changes how General Classification times are awarded.
Instead of every rider receiving the same time as their team, each rider will now earn an individual finishing time for the General Classification, while the team's stage result is determined by the first rider across the finish line.

The format gives teams more flexibility in how they race, allowing them to sacrifice some riders to help their overall General Classification contender reach the line as quickly as possible.
Inside The New Team Time Trial Format
Under the new rules, teams can choose their own strategy rather than keeping the entire group together until the finish. Riders can empty themselves on the front before dropping off, leaving their team leader to finish with the strongest remaining teammates.
FloBikes reporter Gregor Brown described the new format as, "A team time trial in this new format where the team propels its GC rider to the best possible result and everyone else is left to fight on their own."
The format has already been tested in stage races and now makes its Tour de France debut on the 19-kilometer opening stage in Barcelona.
Brown believes the opening day could have a lasting impact on the race.
"This first day will be make or break for teams and their GC stars. Gains and losses will count up and they'll be multiplied exponentially as we go on through the next days."
With contenders like Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard expected to battle for the yellow jersey, the new team time trial could create meaningful time gaps before the race heads into the mountains.
