For nearly a week, Charleston, West Virginia, was the center of the American cycling universe as the host of the 2026 USA Cycling Professional Road National Championships, presented by Spilman Thomas & Battle.

National champions were determined in a handful of events - time trials, criteriums and road races - for athletes of all ages and skill levels, with competition taking place at Haddad Riverfront Park and along the streets of downtown Charleston, running from June 16 through June 21. 

The most-anticipated races were the criteriums for the Elite divisions Thursday, and the Elite road races to wrap things up Sunday afternoon.

Sunday's Elite action kicked off with the Elite Women's Road Race, where Kate Courtney, an established cycling star but relative newcomer to road racing, outsprinted past champion Lauren Stephens to claim the title and the coveted stars and stripes champion jersey. The women's course was 113.8 kilometers.

Courtney actually is the reigning UCI Mountain Bike Marathon world champion, but the hard work she has put in while adding road racing to her list of talents, clearly is paying off. For almost a decade, Courtney has been a standout in the professional cross-country and mountain biking arenas. 

The women's field included more than 50 entries, but one missing name was that of 2025 winner Kristen Faulkner, who opted not to participate after enduring travel complications in her return from the Giro d'Italia Women, where she completed eight of the nine stages before abandoning the race. 

In the men's road race, defending champion Quinn Simmons rode away from Kevin Vermaerke late in the day and cruised to his second consecutive win in the event. It was his third victory overall, with the first coming in 2023.

More than 100 riders were entered for the men's event. Simmons completed the journey in 4:43:16, more than two minutes ahead of Vermaerke. Larry Warbasse was third, just behind Vermaerke.

The Elite Women's Criterium on Thursday featured a high-speed crash and subsequent pileup just before the start of the final lap around the circuit, but the area was cleared in time for 2025 champion Kendall Ryan to successfully defend her title and reclaim the coveted stars and stripes jersey for the fifth time overall.

Olivia Cummins finished second and was followed by Ella Sabo, Andrea Cyr and Alexis Magner. 

On the men's side, Colorado’s Luke Elphingstone handled rain, darkness and an electric final sprint to reach the winner's circle. He bested Brody McDonald, Gavin Hlady, Alexander Scopinich Burgel and Preston Eye.
