Paul Seixas powered to victory in the opening time trial of the Tour of the Basque Country on Monday, delivering an impressive performance on a demanding 13.9-kilometer course around Bilbao.

The French teenager set the fastest time of 17 minutes 9 seconds on a technical route featuring steep climbs and sharp turns.

Compatriot Kevin Vauquelin finished second at 23 seconds, while Austria's Felix Großschartner placed third, 27 seconds behind.

"These seconds are precious, a win is already perfect but the gap is a bonus," Seixas said.

The six-day race began in bright sunshine near Bilbao's iconic Guggenheim Museum and will cover 809 kilometers of hilly and mountainous terrain throughout the week.

Among the overall contenders, Red Bull riders Primož Roglič and Florian Lipowitz limited their losses, finishing 29 and 33 seconds down respectively.

Spain's Juan Ayuso lost more time at 1 minute 26 seconds, while Mexican rider Isaac Del Toro and other climbers are expected to respond in the mountains.

The race continues Tuesday with a stage from Pamplona to the Mendukilo caves in the Pyrenees.
