Jonas Vingegaard powered to a dominant solo victory on stage five of the Volta a Catalunya on Friday to take control of the overall classification.

The two-time Tour de France champion launched a decisive attack on the final climb in the Pyrenees, quickly distancing Remco Evenepoel before reeling in the breakaway riders.

Vingegaard surged clear in the closing kilometers and rode alone to the finish at La Molina.

"Actually it was quite a hard stage... I didn't feel the very, very best in the beginning," Vingegaard said.

"It was good teamwork today," he added. "I felt really strong on the last climb and in the end I'm really happy with the gap I made today."

Austrian rider Felix Gall finished second, 51 seconds behind, while Lenny Martinez edged Florian Lipowitz for third place a further 10 seconds back.

The stage had originally been planned as the queen stage, featuring five categorized climbs, but strong winds forced organizers to shorten the route.

The final ascent of Coll de Pal was reduced by 2.2 kilometers, continuing the weather-related disruptions seen earlier in the race.

The Visma-Lease a Bike rider now leads the general classification by 57 seconds over Gall and 1 minute 9 seconds over Martinez.

Several riders were caught in a crash on the descent of Collada Sobirana with 25 kilometers remaining, including João Almeida and Tom Pidcock, though both were able to continue.

Giulio Ciccone launched a solo move late in the stage, building a lead of over a minute before Vingegaard and Evenepoel began the decisive chase.

Vingegaard attacked again with around 6 kilometers remaining, dropping Evenepoel and catching Ciccone before riding clear to secure the victory.

The Dane continues his strong early-season form following his Paris-Nice triumph as he builds toward his Giro d'Italia and Tour de France ambitions.
