Mathieu Van der Poel won the second stage of Tirreno-Adriatico on Tuesday, edging Isaac Del Toro in a thrilling three-rider sprint finish.

The Dutch rider surged to victory in San Gimignano just as Italian Giulio Pellizzari launched his sprint with 300 meters remaining in the 206km stage from Camaiore.

Pellizzari finished third in a dramatic finale contested in slippery conditions.

The stage was shaped by a late gravel sector reminiscent of the Strade Bianche terrain that helped decide the race.

Del Toro lost it in a corner around Matteo Jorgenson, and Van der Poel also had to adjust his path on the gravel. Thymen Arensman crashed in the same corner, losing his overall lead. Matteo Jorgenson had already crashed earlier when Van der Poel pushed on.

Isaac Del Toro Moves Into Overall Lead

UAE Team Emirates rider Del Toro now leads the general classification by three seconds over Pellizzari.

Van der Poel sits more than a minute down overall after a conservative ride in Monday's individual time trial.

The peloton tackles a demanding third stage on Wednesday, covering 221km from Cortona to Magliano de' Marsi.
