The element of surprise is completely gone. Mathieu van der Poel just proved he is in a league of his own.

The Dutch superstar made his 2026 road debut today. He lined up for Omloop Nieuwsblad for the very first time in his career. And he absolutely destroyed the field.

Mathieu Van der Poel broke away 16km from the finish and soloed to victory at the season-opening cobbled Classic Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday.

The former road race world champion entered the race on the back of a record eighth cyclo-cross world title, having gone unbeaten all winter.

Mathieu Van Der Poel Attacks On The Muur Van Geraardsbergen

The 31-year-old Alpecin-Deceuninck rider finished the 207km race in 4hr 53min 55sec, more than 20 seconds ahead of fellow Dutchman Tim Van Dijke, with Belgian Florian Vermeersch third.

The route featured 12 hills and eight cobbled sectors, including much of the terrain used in the Tour of Flanders.

Vermeersch was the first of the favorites to attack, and chaos erupted on a narrow cobbled climb when several riders fell. Van der Poel showed his bike-handling skill with a sharp swerve to avoid the crash.

"I don't know how I managed that," Van der Poel said afterwards.

"It was chaos. I unclipped and put my foot down to avoid the head of the Tudor rider, then I managed to get back into the rhythm. This was the key moment of the race."

On the Muur Van Geraardsbergen, Van der Poel dropped the reduced main group and set off in pursuit of an earlier breakaway that was about a minute ahead.

He caught them within 4km and rode clear alone to seal victory. Behind him, Van Dijke outsprinted Vermeersch for second place.

"Mathieu is the best rider on the planet on this kind of terrain," said runner-up Vermeersch.

Demi Vollering Triumphs In Women's Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

In the women's 135km edition, Demi Vollering dominated the uphill sprint finish ahead of Polish rider Kasia Niewiadoma.

"I was really ideally placed at the foot of the Muur and it went like a dream," said Vollering, the 2023 Tour de France champion.

Another Dutchwoman, Lorena Wiebes, took third from a chasing group 20 seconds back to complete the podium.
