The Countdown To Omloop Nieuwsblad 20269:19

Saturday, February 28 marks the official launch of the European cobbled Classics season. It is time for Omloop Nieuwsblad 2026

You can catch all the action live and on demand in the United States and Canada on FloBikes. This is where the real racing begins. The warmups are over. It is time for cobbles, wind, and pure tactical nerve. The road to Paris-Roubaix starts right here.

Tom Pidcock Is the Man to Beat

Tom Pidcock just stamped his authority all over Spain. He is coming into Opening Weekend swinging.

At the Ruta del Sol, Pidcock won the final stage with a devastating acceleration. He launched off the front on the Alto de la Primera Cruz and absolutely no one could follow. He finished ten seconds clear of the pack.

He looked unbelievably sharp. He showed serious climbing punch and that killer instinct you need for the Classics. That matters immensely heading into Omloop Nieuwsblad.

Pidcock handles a bike better than almost anyone in the peloton. He is explosive on short climbs like the Muur. Supported by Canadian Nicholas Zukowski at Pinarello Q36.5, he is now the standout favorite. Momentum in February means everything.

Cold, Fast, And Brutal Omloop 2026

The weather forecast has completely shifted. The rain is gone.

We expect mostly sunny conditions. Temperatures will hover between 43 and 48 degrees Fahrenheit. That is proper Belgian cold.

Without the mud, this race becomes incredibly fast and highly tactical. Organizers also added more climbing this year to break up the peloton. They want to avoid a massive group sprint like we saw last year.

Riders will tackle eight cobbled sectors and twelve climbs. The decisive moves will happen on the Tenbosse, the Parikeberg, the legendary Muur van Geraardsbergen, or the Bosberg. After that, it is just a flat 11.8 kilometers to the finish in Ninove. Expect absolute fireworks on those cobbles.

Mathieu van der Poel To Race Omloop Nieuwsblad 2026

Wout van Aert is making his 2026 road debut. He fractured his ankle in cyclocross earlier this winter. His recovery looks good, but this is his first real test.

Team Visma might have a problem. Christophe Laporte crashed out of the Ruta del Sol. His injury status is unclear. That could seriously weaken Van Aert's support crew.

Keep an eye on Matthew Brennan too. He climbs well and has a massive sprint. If things come back together, he is dangerous.

We also need to talk about Mathieu van der Poel! The Dutch star announced today he is taking part! That changes the entire race dynamic.

But the field is still incredibly deep. Defending champion Søren Wærenskjold will try to repeat. Jasper Philipsen is the fastest man if it comes down to a reduced sprint. Biniam Girmay has strong early form. Tim Wellens, Jordi Meeus, and Paul Magnier are all primed for a fight.

Strong North American For Classics 2026

This is a big weekend for North American riders.

EF Education brings Luke Lamperti and Colby Simmons. Riley Sheehan will back up Girmay at NSN Cycling Team alongside Canadian Guillaume Boivin.

Ineos Grenadiers features Magnus Sheffield and Artem Schmidt. Sheffield has the pure power needed for the cobbles. He could easily animate a long-range attack.

This is the first real punch of the cobbled season. Form will be tested. Confidence will be built.

Tune in to FloBikes live for our viewers in the US and Canada. The war on the cobbles begins Saturday.
