Jonas Vingegaard looks set to tick off the missing piece in his Grand Tour puzzle this May, with Spanish newspaper Marca reporting that the Dane has a deal in place to make his debut at the 2026 Giro d’Italia.

The Visma-Lease a Bike star won the Vuelta a España last September and already owns two yellow jerseys from the Tour de France. A Giro title would complete the set and place him among cycling’s most elite, only seven riders in history have won all three Grand Tours.

Rumors of a Giro bid surfaced in the 2024 off-season but were shelved in favor of another Tour-first calendar. This time, however, signs point to a change of plan, with the Grande Partenza set to roll out from Bulgaria.

In past interviews, Vingegaard hinted at his ambition. “I think I’d prefer to win all three Grand Tours,” he told DH Les Sports+. And in another chat with Marca, he named the Giro as the one race he’d choose if he could win just one more.

The Giro would mark the ninth Grand Tour of his career. Since finishing 46th on debut at the 2020 Vuelta, Vingegaard has never placed lower than second on GC in a Grand Tour, making him an instant favorite for the maglia rosa, especially with Tadej Pogačar not expected to return to the Italian race this year.

Other big names likely to feature include João Almeida, Adam Yates, Felix Gall, and Red Bull-Bora’s Jai Hindley and Giulio Pellizzari. The final confirmation of Vingegaard’s schedule is expected during Visma’s team presentation in Spain on January 13.
