The terrain in Rwanda is known to be among the most challenging in the world, and many riders have had the opportunity to experience the landscape in the Tour of Rwanda and other special events.
The popularity of competitive cycling in Africa continues to grow, and 2024 was a banner year for African riders.
First, Eritrean sprinter Biniam Girmay made history of his own by becoming the first Black African (third African overall) to win a stage of the prestigious Tour de France, but he didn’t stop there.
Girmay went on to win three stages during the Tour de France 2025 and took home the green jersey, earned by the winner of the Points Classification at the TDF each year.
Later in the summer of 2024, more than two dozen African cyclists competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Now, the spotlight turns to the continent itself, as riders from across the globe converge on Southeast Africa and Rwanda’s capital and most populated city, also known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
Though the official entry list for the 2025 UCI Road World Championships has not yet been revealed, there are three riders from the elite ranks you definitely should expect to see there – reigning world champions Tadej Pogacar (men’s road race), Remco Evenepoel (men’s time trial) and Lotte Kopecky (women’s road race).
In 2024, the UCI Road World Championships was held in Zurich.

About The UCI Road World Championships
The UCI Road World Championships boasts more than a century of history and tradition, though it took a gradual evolution to become the spectacle it is today.
The amateur-only debut of the event came in 1921, followed by the inclusion of professional in 1927. The addition of a women’s category came in 1958, and youth categories were added to the menu in 1975.
The weeklong UCI Road World Championships also now includes a team time trial mixed relay (2019) and a U23 women’s title (2022), which be earned in a standalone women’s event for the first time in 2025.
In 2025, the schedule includes 13 separate events over the eight days of competition.
The winners are considered the world champions and get to wear the rainbow jersey during all competitions of the same discipline during the following season.
