Wout van Aert has pulled out of the Belgian National Championships at the last minute due to illness, according to Belgian media outlet HLN. The Visma–Lease a Bike star was one of the pre-race favorites for the road title in Binche but was forced to withdraw Saturday morning with a stomach bug.

The news reportedly came as a shock to his team, especially after a successful altitude training camp that appeared to leave van Aert in peak form. Sources say van Aert struggled to eat breakfast and looked visibly unwell ahead of the planned race start. Adding to the concern, his wife and children are also said to be sick.

Tour de France Status Uncertain

The unexpected illness has now cast doubt over his participation in the Tour de France, which begins next Saturday in Lille. Van Aert is expected to play a crucial role in Visma’s Tour campaign, both as a stage hunter and key team support rider.

HLN reports that the team has decided to take no risks with his recovery, hoping that the illness is short-lived and that he will be fully fit by the time the Tour begins. Van Aert’s teammates were also reportedly surprised by the news, with no alternate race plans in place before his withdrawal.

Key Role for Visma Still at Risk

As one of cycling’s most versatile stars, van Aert’s presence at the Tour is critical to Visma’s ambitions. Whether he lines up in Lille next week remains uncertain—but all eyes will be on his recovery over the coming days.
