Tour de France 2025 What To Know: TDF Route Has New Towns, Classic Climbs
The Tour de France, the grandest of all of cycling's Grand Tours, returns July 5 with Tadej Pogačar looking to defend his crown.

The Tour de France 2025 will remain entirely within French borders for the first time since 2020, marking a return to tradition for cycling’s most prestigious race.
The 112th edition of the race begins Saturday, July 5, in Lille Métropole and will conclude Sunday, July 27, with the iconic finish on Paris’ Champs-Élysées. And the entire Tour is streaming live in Canada on FloBikes and the FloSports app.

Over 21 stages, the peloton will cover 3,338.8 kilometers across 11 French regions and 34 departments. Riders will tackle seven flat stages, six hilly stages and six mountainous stages, including five summit finishes and two time trials. The total elevation gain will reach a demanding 52,500 meters.
Tour de France Course Has New Towns, Familiar Tests
Among the 39 host towns and cities, eight will make their Tour debuts: Lauwin-Planque, Bayeux, Chinon, Ennezat, Le Mont-Dore Puy de Sancy, Bollène, Vif and Mantes-la-Ville. Stage 10 ends at Le Mont-Dore Puy de Sancy in the Massif Central, while Stage 21 begins in Mantes-la-Ville before heading to Paris.
The highest point of the race will be the Col de la Loze, peaking at 2,304 meters in Stage 18. It will be climbed from the eastern side for the first time, ending in Courchevel. Other mountain finishes include Hautacam, Luchon-Superbagnères, Mont Ventoux and La Plagne.
TDF Time Trials And Tactics
Time trials return with significance this year.
Stage 5’s 33-kilometer individual effort in Caen offers flat, fast terrain, favoring strong rouleurs. In contrast, Stage 13’s short 10.9-kilometer climb to Peyragudes provides a late-race test for General Classification contenders.
Bonus seconds—10, 6, and 4—will be awarded for most stage finishes, which could prove decisive across an increasingly competitive GC field.
Tour de France Key Storylines: GC Battle And Return To The Pyrenees
With 184 riders from 23 teams expected to start, much of the early focus will be on how GC contenders handle the pair of time trials and summit finishes.
Riders such as Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar and Remco Evenepoel are expected to feature prominently in the overall standings.
The return of the Pau to Luchon-Superbagnères stage for the first time since 1986 adds historical weight to Stage 14. That day will be one to watch in the Pyrenees, a key battleground for GC hopefuls.
Tadej Pogačar Seeking Fourth Tour de France Win
Tadej Pogačar will begin his pursuit of a fourth Tour de France title and second consecutive yellow jersey when the 2025 edition of cycling’s most prestigious race begins July 5 in Lille.
The Slovenian star, who claimed victories in 2020, 2021 and 2024, enters as the favorite once again, but he faces stiff competition over a grueling 21-stage route that will test every discipline in the sport.
