Tour de France 2025 Stage 21 Preview

This is it, the final stage of the Tour de France 2025!

Yes, it's Paris. Yes, it's the Champs-Élysées. But while it's nearly a done deal that Tadej Pogacar will claim his fourth Tour de France title, this year's Tour finale won't be as ceremonial as in the past.

In Stage 21, a 132-kilometer ride from Mantes-la-Ville to the Champs-Elysees, the riders will face three ascents of the cobbled streets of Montmartre.

Will Pogacar go for one last win in a stage usually saved for the sprinters, or will he just enjoy the day and make sure he arrives safely at the finish line?

In a rain-soaked Stage 20 on Saturday, Pogacar nearly got caught in a late crash, but he was able to avoid any chaos and made it across the line without issue, 32nd among the remaining 160 riders.

The stage got a surprise winner, as Australian Kaden Groves, known more as a sprinter, was able to break away and collect the first solo victory of his career.

All of his previous wins came in sprint finishes, but with a depleted Alpecin - Deceuninck squad that saw the abandonment of stars Jasper Philipsen and Matheiu van der Poel earlier in the race, Groves was given the green light to showcase his versatility. He's already known as one of the better climbers among the sprint specialists.

Groves rode solo for 16 kilometers Saturday and finished 54 seconds ahead of Frank van den Broek. Groves is just one of 114 riders to win stages at the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España.

Heading into the final day of the Tour de France 2025, Pogacar leads two-time TDF winner Jonas Vingegaard by 4 minutes, 24 seconds, while Florian Lipowitz, wearing the white jersey as the best young rider, is in third place, 11 minutes, 9 seconds off the lead.

For viewers in Canada, FloBikes coverage of Stage 21 will begin at 10 a.m. Eastern and is expected to conclude around 2:25 p.m. EDT.

Stage 21: Tour de France 2025

Traditionally, Stage 21 of the Tour de France, at least the first half of it, is ceremonial and celebratory, allowing riders to enjoy a time of reflection and recognition of the eventual winner, who, out of respect, isn't challenged on the final day.

At least that's usually the case when the leading rider is far enough ahead after 20 stages that being overtaken is unlikely.

In 2025, though, even with a lead of more than four minutes, it still may not be time to call Pogacar the champion, even unofficially.

Stage 21 this year will return to the famed Champs-Élysées, but it also will pay tribute to last summer's Olympic Games and include three climbs on cobbled streets of Montmartre, which were featured in the 2024 Olympic road race.

This means how the stage will end is going to be less predictable than the sprint finishes of the past.

How The Tour de France Usually Ends

After the pomp and circumstance and all the photo opportunities, there's still a stage to be won, and it still could be a career-defining opportunity for any rider.

The traditional conclusion of Stage 21 brings the riders into Paris and around the Champs-Élysées for eight laps, before a sprint finish determines one last stage winner for the year. That also means Stage 21 sometimes determines the winner for the green sprinters/points jersey.

Last year, due to preparations in Paris for the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics, there was a deviation in the schedule that saw the TDF 2024 end with a 33.7-kilometer individual time trial.

With things back to normal-ish, the Tour de France 2025 will conclude with a 132.3-kilometer ride from Mantes-la-Ville into Paris.
