Tour de France 2025 Stage 20 Preview: The Penultimate Stage, End In Sight
Tour de France 2025 Stage 20 Preview: The Penultimate Stage, End In Sight
The penultimate stage of the TDF '25 will mean different things to different riders - a last chance at a stage win, or just the end of a very long journey.

Stage 19 of the Tour de France 2025 was supposed be about the climbing, as it was the final mountain stage of the year, and most knew it would be the start of Tadej Pogacar's victory tour, given his strength over such terrain.
Even the rain and hail that blanketed the journey to La Plagne could've been predicted, but what nobody saw coming was having to abbreviate the stage due to a contagious disease in a herd of cattle located along the original route between Albertville and La Plagne.

The pivot meant changing the route from 129.9 kilometers to just 93.1, including a 7-kilometer ceremonial parade start.
Regardless of the situation, Stage 19 produced a winner - Thymen Arensman, who also won Stage 14 - while he and the rest of the 161 riders now are one day closer to reaching Paris.
But that also means times is running out for any riders looking to take a stage of the most prestigious race in cycling, and Stage 20 of the Tour de France certainly will take some grit and strategy for any one eyeing the podium.
This also should be were the eventual GC winner will be able to put the finishing touches on a hard-fought battle.
Barring any disaster, there's no reason to think anyone is going to catch defending champion Pogacar, who is two days away from claiming his fourth TDF victory (2020, 2021, 2024)
Through 19 stages, he leads two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard by 4 minutes, 24 seconds, while Florian Lipowitz, in the white jersey for the best young rider, is third, 11 minutes, 9 seconds off the lead.
Pogacar and Vingegaard finished two seconds behind Arensman on Friday, nearly chasing him down in the final meters, after it looked like he was going to cruise to a solo victory after a long ride alone in the rain.
For viewers in Canada, FloBikes coverage of Stage 20 will begin at 5:55 a.m. Eastern and is expected to conclude around 10:50 a.m. EDT.
Here’s what to know about Stage 20 of the Tour de France 2025, a 184.2-kilometer ride from Nantua to Pontarlier that should decide this year's overall winner, at least unofficially.

Stage 20: Tour de France 2025
The penultimate stage of the Tour de France 2025 will mean different things to different riders.
Some will dig deep knowing this may be their last chance to take a stage win or reach the podium at this year's race.
Others may be relieved that they're nearing the end of the three-week journey.
Finally, a select few still might be within reach of the GC victory or a spot on the podium, and this is the last real chance to make a push, as the last stage of the race traditionally is more ceremonial than confrontational.
In Stage 20, the competitors will endure some early climbing, reaching almost 2,900 meters of elevation, but a lot of descending and rolling hills will help the kilometers pass by quickly.
The riders will face the Category 4 Cote de Longeville as the day draws to a close, and the last kilometers will be a flat ride into the finish.
Despite the flat conclusion, a sprint finish is not expected. It's more likely that the terrain will allow a group, or groups, to break away. That means one brave rider could escape from there for a solo win, or there could be a dash for the line amongst those in the lead group.
As always, 10, 6 and 4 bonus seconds will be awarded to the first three finishers.

Who Won Stage 20 Of The Tour de France In 2024?
Stage 20 of the Tour de France 2024 came with a variety of emotions because the riders knew Stage 21 was going to be a non-traditional individual time trial due to preparations taking place in Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Normally, the final stage is filled with ceremony and celebration that allows the eventual winner to bask in the moment and share some time riding with teammates, posing for photos - even toasting glasses of champagne.
Once Pogacar won Stage 19, everyone had pretty much accepted that he'd locked up his third Tour de France title, so the top contenders were thinking more of finishing safely than winning Stage 20.
Even Pogacar was content with letting the breakaway go, but he somehow found his way to the front of the pack to log another win, his fifth of the TDF 2024, leaving him with an advantage of more than five minutes and only a 34-kilometer time trial standing between him and becoming the first rider in almost three decades to win the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in the same season.
