Tour de France 2025 Stage 18 Preview: Climbing Into The Clouds

For all the climbing the riders didn't do in Stage 17 of the Tour de France 2025, they'll make up for it in Stage 18 with 5,500 meters of vertical gain.

While the rain washed away the hopes of more than a dozen riders who were involved in a massive crash in the final kilometer of Stage 17 of the Tour de France 2025, including Eritrean superstar Biniam Girmay, the chaos only gave Italy's Jonathan Milan a clearer path to this year's green jersey.

Milan went on to outsprint Jordi Meeus for his second stage win of this year's race - he also won Stage 8 - and essentially has locked up the points race for this year, which was won by Girmay in 2024.

With only four stages remaining in the Tour de France 2025, the finale in Paris should be the only remaining opportunity for Milan and the other sprinters to shine.

For all the climbing they didn't do in Stage 17 on Wednesday, the riders at the Tour de France 2025 will make up for it in Stage 18, which has been tabbed as the most demanding stage of this year's race and features 5,500 meters of vertical gain.

If defending champion Tadej Pogacar can survive Stage 18, a fourth TDF title will be tighter in his grasp.

Through Stage 17, Pogacar leads two-time TDF winner Jonas Vingegaard by 4 minutes, 15 seconds, while Florian Lipowitz, in the white jersey as a best young rider, is third at 9 minutes, 3 seconds.

For viewers in Canada, FloBikes coverage of Stage 18 will begin at 6 a.m. Eastern and is expected to conclude around 12:05 p.m. EDT.

Stage 18: Tour de France 2025

There are 21 stages to choose from, but THIS is the one that has been described as the most demanding day of the Tour de France 2025.

The highest classification for climbs is HC (Hors Catégorie), and this stage has three of them (Col du Glandon, Col de la Madeleine and Col de la Loze) along the 171.5-kilometer route from Vif to Col de la Loze.

These key climbs will produce a vertical gain of 5,500 meters, and while the riders have seen the general area multiple times in recent years, that won't make it any easier on their legs.

The finale is a 26.2 kilometer stretch that averages a 6.5% gradient but hits double digits more than once.

The first time the Col de la Loze featured in the TDF was 2020, and it was back in 2023, with Felix Gall winning from the breakaway.

Who will have the best legs so many days into the grueling Tour de France 2025?

Who Won Stage 18 Of The Tour de France In 2024?

The last person not named Tadej Pogacar to win a stage of the Tour de France 2024 was Victor Campenaerts, who got the job done in the 179.5-kilometer Stage 18.

The Belgian rolled to the win during a stage that didn't get the full attention of the main GC contenders, who were more focused on saving themselves for the final three stages of the race and going for the overall victory. They even called Stage 18 a calm before a storm.

Campenaerts was part of a group that broke away, and his sound strategy helped him ride to victory.
