Derek Gee Ready to Shock the Giro d'Italia 2025

The 2025 Giro d'Italia is here—and Canada’s Derek Gee isn't just lining up to ride. He's lining up to fight. The 26-year-old will lead Israel–Premier Tech’s GC charge when the race kicks off May 9 in Italy.

In 2023, Gee turned heads across the cycling world with his relentless breakaway efforts at the Giro. He landed four second-place stage finishes, launched attack after attack, and earned the overall combativity award. Then, just months later, he quietly finished ninth overall at the Tour de France—in his debut appearance.
That kind of performance doesn't happen by accident. In 2024, Gee kept proving his pedigree. He claimed a stage win at the Critérium du Dauphiné, wore the yellow jersey, and finished third overall—just behind Primož Roglič, the same man he'll be up against in this year’s Giro.
Then last July? While Tadej Pogačar was grabbing headlines at the Tour de France, Gee quietly hammered out a ninth-place finish overall. In his first ever Tour!

Now in 2025, Gee looks even sharper. He's already won the overall at O Gran Camiño, placed fourth at Tirreno–Adriatico, and came third last week at the Tour of the Alps. And that was after fighting back from early race troubles—a sign of resilience and real GC potential.

The Giro field is stacked. Roglič remains the top favorite. UAE brings both Juan Ayuso and Adam Yates. Simon Yates and Wout van Aert lead a dangerous Visma–Lease a Bike squad. But Derek Gee has the engine—and the mentality—to survive deep into the mountains and capitalize when the race gets messy.
He's not coming just to survive. He's coming to shake up the general classification.
If Derek Gee finds his moment, don't be surprised if he rips this Giro wide open.
