It already has been an exciting season for bike fans with the action of the Giro D'italia having set the stage for the sport's busiest time of year. 

Now comes the biggest event of the year in cycling: The Tour de France 2025. 

The TDF will be full of thrilling action and is sure to have something for every cycling fan. The highly anticipated Tour de France starts on July 5, 2025 and end on July 27, 2025.

This year's TDF will start in Lielle, France and finish at the world Paris Champs-Élysées. 

Throughout the journey, riders will fight through each stage for the chance to cross the finish line wearing the coveted yellow jersey. 

The leader of the race at the end of every stage will be wearing the yellow jersey. So why does the TDF leader wear the "maillot jaune" after every stage? 

Well it's based on a whole number of factors, with help from FloBikes analyst and reporter Gregor Brown, here's a breakdown of  how the yellow jersey works.

What Does It Mean To Wear The Yellow Jersey In The TDF

To wear the yellow jersey means that the rider is in the lead after one of the stages. It can also change each day or not change at all during the 21 stages and all depends on the scores. Every rider's goal is to have that jersey on, according to Brown

How Scoring Works At The Tour de France 2025

So we are not going to get too technical but we'll explain how the scoring works and how a rider wins the whole thing.  

So obviously the riders want to complete the race in less time than their opponents. They also get bonus points that help add to their score Each day scores are compiled and the one with lowest combined time after 3 weeks of cycling is the winner of Tour De France, according to Brown.

The 1919 Tour de France had the debut of the yellow jersey.
