The Wanda Diamond League action for 2024 continues April 27, and the circuit will remain in China for a second consecutive stop, this time heading to Shanghai. The season-opening event is being held in Xiamen on April 20.

The 15-event Diamond League schedule this year will take elite track and field athletes across the globe, with the season-ending championship event taking places in Brussels, Belgium, on Sept. 13-14. There will be a short break in the schedule for the 2024 Summer Olympics in early August.

The day in Shanghai for the Shanghai/Suzhou Diamond League 2024 will include seven men’s disciplines and seven women’s disciplines, as athletes continue collecting points toward the year’s final event in Belgium.

The invitation-only Diamond League brings together the most elite track & field athletes to showcase their skills, earn prize money, collect points toward the season-ending championship event and ultimately elevate the status of athletics across the globe.

Traditionally, Diamond League competition includes a slate of 16 disciplines. Points accumulated during the first 14 events of the season determine the athletes who advance to the final event, where they compete for more prize money and Diamond League titles.

The disciplines featured in Shanghai will be:

Men

  • 100 Meters
  • 800 Meters
  • 5,000 Meters
  • 110-Meter Hurdles
  • High Jump
  • Pole Vault
  • Long Jump

Women

  • 200 Meters
  • 400 Meters
  • 100-Meter Hurdles
  • 3,000-Meter Steeplechase
  • Long Jump
  • Shot Put
  • Javelin

All competition will take place at Shanghai Stadium, which opened in 1997, covers 190,000 square meters and has a floor area of 170,000 square meters.

The venue has top-of-the-line technology to keep the competition area pristine, to provide a terrific spectator experience, to share that experience with the world via satellite and to make sure it all happens with the safety and security of all involved in mind.

The stadium received a complete makeover between 2020 and 2022 and now can fit 72,000 spectators. Ironically, the permanent running track was removed during this process to make the venue soccer-specific.

Shanghai Stadium is familiar with top-tier events, including the qualifying rounds of soccer for the 2008 Olympics, the Special Olympics and multiple editions of the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix and Golden League Shanghai.
